Asbestos Specialists Across Berkshire

Berkshire's engineering and defence works used asbestos insulation for much of the twentieth century. That runs from the Royal Ordnance sites around Burghfield to the light industry along the Thames valley.

Reading, Slough and Bracknell all grew fast after 1945, and Bracknell was made a new town outright. So a large share of the county's buildings date from years when asbestos was still a normal building material.

Slough Trading Estate is the biggest cluster of industrial property in the county. It has been rebuilt in layers since the 1920s, which is just the pattern that leaves asbestos behind in roofs, partitions and service ducts. Windsor, Newbury and the older Thames-side towns are the opposite. There, asbestos more often came in with later extensions and new roofs than with the original building.

Berkshire has around 407,050 properties, and about 77% of them were built before the 1999 asbestos ban, the biggest share of those in the 1965 to 1982 period. What decides the risk is whether anything is disturbed, so intact material left alone is usually the lower-risk option.

The most common property type in Berkshire is flats and maisonettes, at about 26.2% of the stock, followed by terraced houses at 24.3%. In flats and maisonettes the material is as likely to be in the communal parts, in service risers, ducts and the panels around them, as it is inside any one home.

Managing & Disposing of Asbestos in Berkshire

It applies to business premises, public buildings and the shared parts of blocks of flats right across Berkshire. What the duty to manage requires is set out in full in our guide for landlords and businesses.

Disposing of asbestos in Berkshire

Berkshire is covered by six councils and the rules vary. Reading, Wokingham and Bracknell Forest share the re3 sites (Smallmead and Longshot Lane), open only to people paying council tax to those three councils, with proof of address. Make a separate asbestos booking between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday or 8am and 12 noon Saturday, then call re3 on 0800 988 3023 with the time. Up to 60kg is free, then £8.40 per 20kg, and Bracknell Forest says payment on site is by pre-paid, debit or credit card only; double wrap it in thick plastic and seal. Reading's own page instead lists asbestos within a free 100 litres of DIY waste per visit, so confirm the allowance with re3. West Berkshire accepts up to 15 cement-bonded sheets (no bigger than 1.2m by 0.6m) in 12 months free at Newtown Road, Newbury, by appointment on 01635 519080; households must also register for a recycling centre permit; bring proof of address and photo ID, double bag or double wrap and tape it, and asbestos removed by a builder is refused. Newtown Road refuses visits on foot and vehicles over 8.2m in combined length. Slough (Chalvey) is for Slough residents with proof of address and photo ID, takes no more than 5 small sheets, dampened and double bagged or tightly wrapped, with the first two 1m by 1m sheets free then £4.80 per piece, card only. Chalvey has a 1.7m height barrier, bars vans and pickups, limits trailers to 1.5m by 0.91m and does not let you carry waste in on foot. Windsor and Maidenhead takes up to three sheets or sacks at Stafferton Way, Maidenhead, double wrapped and labelled, for borough residents only with an Advantage Card or photo ID and proof of residency; access is by vehicle only, there is a 2.1m height barrier and vans need a van permit. Check your council's current rules. (council source, verified 2026-10-10)

Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.

Asbestos waste is classed as hazardous (special) waste. So there are rules on how it's wrapped, labelled, carried and recorded. We set them out in full in our disposal guide.

Councils across Berkshire set their own rules for households. When we arrange the work, disposal is handled for you. For the rules where you live, see our asbestos disposal by council lookup, or check typical prices in the UK asbestos removal cost report.

Asbestos Guides for Berkshire

The largest group of homes in Berkshire is flats and maisonettes, and of the homes built before 2000 the largest group went up between 1965 and 1982. In flats the material is as often in the parts nobody owns individually as it is inside any one home, which changes who is responsible for it.

Asbestos in Berkshire: Common Questions

Where can I dispose of asbestos in Berkshire?
It depends which council area you're in. Berkshire has more than one council, and they set their own rules on amount, wrapping, booking and cost. You'll find them above. When we arrange the work, it's taken to a permitted site for you instead.
Do councils in Berkshire charge to dispose of asbestos?
Some do, some don't. Berkshire has more than one council, and each sets its own charges and limits, so it depends where you live. The details above are from the councils' own guidance. Councils change these, so check before you travel.
Which parts of Berkshire do you cover?
All of it. We arrange asbestos work in 13 towns and cities across Berkshire, including Reading, Slough, Bracknell and Maidenhead, and in the villages around them. Wherever you are in the county, licensable work is done by HSE-licensed contractors.
Is asbestos likely in a Berkshire property?
Around 77% of properties in Berkshire (313,530 of 407,050) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999, so much of the county's housing dates from when it was still in use. Of those, the largest group was built between 1965 and 1982. That tells you nothing about one property. Only a survey or a lab test can show what's there. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
