Only a little, already taken down? What Sheffield says

Sheffield

Sheffield accepts domestic cement bonded asbestos only, at four of its five household waste recycling centres: Beighton Road, Blackstock Road, Deepcar (Manchester Road) and High Green (Greaves Lane).

The full rule
  • The fifth, Longley Avenue West at Shirecliffe, is unable to accept asbestos.
  • Asbestos must be double wrapped and the outer wrapping must be clear, so that both layers of wrapping can be seen, or it will not be taken.
  • None of the four sites is open every day: each is closed on one or two set weekdays, so check the opening days of the site you choose before you travel.
  • The sites are for the use of Sheffield residents and not for traders, who must use a properly licensed waste disposal site.
  • There are height barriers of 1.8m at all the sites.
  • If you want to visit in a van, a pick-up or with a trailer you need a permit, or must use the booking-in procedure first by phoning 0114 2734567.
  • Sheffield does not publish a charge for asbestos.

Your Local Asbestos Specialists in Sheffield

Sheffield, in South Yorkshire, grew around its steel and metal industries, and its buildings show that history. From Victorian terraces and industrial works to post-war estates and high-rise blocks, much of the city was built before asbestos was banned. So asbestos can turn up in homes, workshops and business buildings all over Sheffield. Often it sits there safely until something disturbs it.

Across Sheffield and South Yorkshire we arrange asbestos surveys, testing and removal. The specialist contractors we work with also reach nearby Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Chesterfield. That's for homeowners planning an extension, landlords managing the shared parts of a block of flats and businesses refurbishing a unit. The rule is the same for everyone. You can't tell if a material contains asbestos by looking at it. Get anything suspect surveyed or lab-tested before work starts.

We cover the S postcode area across Sheffield and the surrounding towns.

Sheffield's buildings and asbestos

81.4% of properties in Sheffield were built before 2000

That's 214,730 of 263,910. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Sheffield

There are 263,910 domestic properties in Sheffield, and around 81.4% of them were built before asbestos was fully banned in 1999. The largest single group was built between 1900 and 1939. Property from this period was built before asbestos use peaked, so where asbestos is present it usually arrived with later work: post-war repairs, added textured coatings, new outbuilding roofs and heating upgrades. That later work is common enough in housing of this age that it still needs checking before anything is disturbed. The largest group by type is semi-detached houses (30.5%). In semi-detached housing the most common finds are asbestos cement garage and shed roofs, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board in airing cupboards and around boilers, and cement soffits and rainwater goods. The next largest group is terraced houses at 27.8%, where party walls and shared roof spaces mean neighbouring work can disturb material next door. By period, 12% were built before 1900, 21.1% between 1919 and 1939 and 17.4% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Sheffield property?
Around 81.4% of properties in Sheffield (214,730 of 263,910) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1900 and 1939. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
