Only a little, already taken down? What Nottinghamshire says

Nottinghamshire

In Nottinghamshire, asbestos is not accepted at recycling centres.

The full rule
  • Nottinghamshire County Council runs a paid, appointment-only service at a dedicated site for Nottinghamshire residents with cement-bonded asbestos they have dismantled and removed themselves from their own home, garage or shed: one load, brought in a car, car with trailer, minibus, motorhome or hire van up to 3.5t, sheets no larger than 180cm by 90cm and unbroken, double wrapped in asbestos disposal bags or thick plastic and sealed, for a fee of £140.
  • Bring ID to show on entry (for example a driving licence, utility bill or bank statement) or access will be denied.
  • It can be used once only per property, and landlords, traders and asbestos a trader took down are excluded.
  • Nottingham City runs a separate booked service for city residents on Saturday mornings (about one car-boot load, in a car or small van up to 2.5t, double-wrapped in 1000-gauge polythene and taped, once only per property), booked on 0115 915 5555.
  • The city service is only for asbestos you dismantled and removed yourself from your own Nottingham home, garage or shed; businesses, traders and landlords, asbestos a trader took down, and asbestos from other outbuildings, farm buildings or conversion works are excluded, and you will not be allowed entry unless you come at your allocated time.

Mansfield's own pages add: Mansfield District Council cannot collect any items containing asbestos on its bulky item collection. Its pages give no other asbestos disposal guidance.

Mansfield's buildings and asbestos

81.6% of properties in the Mansfield council area were built before 2000

That's 42,310 of 51,840. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Mansfield

In semi-detached housing the most common finds are asbestos cement garage and shed roofs, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board in airing cupboards and around boilers, and cement soffits and rainwater goods. That matters in the Mansfield council area because semi-detached houses are the largest group there, 35.7% of 51,840 properties, and around 81.6% of the stock predates the 1999 asbestos ban. The largest group was built between 1900 and 1939. Property from this period was built before asbestos use peaked, so where asbestos is present it usually arrived with later work: post-war repairs, added textured coatings, new outbuilding roofs and heating upgrades. That later work is common enough in housing of this age that it still needs checking before anything is disturbed. By period, 6.3% were built before 1900, 16.9% between 1919 and 1939 and 17% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Mansfield sits in a tight NG18 and NG19 postcode area, and the surrounding Mansfield area brings in Mansfield Woodhouse, Forest Town and Warsop. We cover all of it.

Disposal is the local catch. Nottinghamshire doesn't take asbestos at its recycling centres at all. It runs a paid, appointment-only collection instead. So you can't just take a bagged sheet to the tip here. We arrange surveys, testing and removal across the NG18 and NG19 districts, and licensed disposal is handled as part of the work.

We also cover the surrounding area, including Sutton in Ashfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, Hucknall, Arnold, Boughton and Eastwood.

Is asbestos likely in a Mansfield property?
Around 81.6% of properties in the Mansfield council area (42,310 of 51,840) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1900 and 1939. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
