Asbestos Specialists Across Nottinghamshire

The Nottinghamshire coalfield used a lot of asbestos in colliery buildings and plant. Nottingham's lace and textile factories lagged their machinery and pipework with it.

Large inter-war and post-war council estates surround the city and the old pit villages. They were built well inside the years when asbestos was in normal use.

The old pit villages around Mansfield, Worksop and Kirkby-in-Ashfield have lots of inter-war and post-war housing built for mining families. Next to them are colliery buildings that used asbestos heavily. In Nottingham itself, older industrial and business buildings are the likelier place for sprayed coatings and pipe lagging. Newark and Retford keep much older market town centres. There, asbestos usually came in with shopfront changes, roof repairs and rear extensions.

More of Nottinghamshire's 540,850 properties were built between 1900 and 1939 than in any later period before the 1999 ban, and about 79.7% predate the ban altogether. Housing of that age has usually been re-roofed, extended or rewired at least once, and it is those later works that most often introduced asbestos.

The most common property type in Nottinghamshire is semi-detached houses, at about 28.7% of the stock, followed by terraced houses at 21.6%. Semi-detached houses built before the ban frequently have an asbestos cement garage roof or a sectional outbuilding, which is among the most common things we are asked to remove.

Managing & Disposing of Asbestos in Nottinghamshire

It applies to business premises, public buildings and the shared parts of blocks of flats right across Nottinghamshire. What the duty to manage requires is set out in full in our guide for landlords and businesses.

Disposing of asbestos in Nottinghamshire

In Nottinghamshire, asbestos is not accepted at recycling centres. Nottinghamshire County Council runs a paid, appointment-only service at a dedicated site for Nottinghamshire residents with cement-bonded asbestos they have dismantled and removed themselves from their own home, garage or shed: one load, brought in a car, car with trailer, minibus, motorhome or hire van up to 3.5t, sheets no larger than 180cm by 90cm and unbroken, double wrapped in asbestos disposal bags or thick plastic and sealed, for a fee of £140. Bring ID to show on entry (for example a driving licence, utility bill or bank statement) or access will be denied. It can be used once only per property, and landlords, traders and asbestos a trader took down are excluded. Nottingham City runs a separate booked service for city residents on Saturday mornings (about one car-boot load, in a car or small van up to 2.5t, double-wrapped in 1000-gauge polythene and taped, once only per property), booked on 0115 915 5555. The city service is only for asbestos you dismantled and removed yourself from your own Nottingham home, garage or shed; businesses, traders and landlords, asbestos a trader took down, and asbestos from other outbuildings, farm buildings or conversion works are excluded, and you will not be allowed entry unless you come at your allocated time. Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.

Asbestos waste is classed as hazardous (special) waste. So there are rules on how it's wrapped, labelled, carried and recorded. We set them out in full in our disposal guide.

Councils across Nottinghamshire set their own rules for households. When we arrange the work, disposal is handled for you. For the rules where you live, see our asbestos disposal by council lookup, or check typical prices in the UK asbestos removal cost report.

Asbestos Guides for Nottinghamshire

The largest group of homes in Nottinghamshire is semi-detached houses, and of the homes built before 2000 the largest group went up between 1900 and 1939. Semi-detached houses built before the ban very often came with a garage or an outbuilding, and that is usually where the cement sheeting is.

Asbestos in Nottinghamshire: Common Questions

Where can I dispose of asbestos in Nottinghamshire?
Through Nottinghamshire, under its own rules on amount, wrapping and booking, which you'll find above. When we arrange the work, it's taken to a permitted site for you instead.
Does Nottinghamshire charge to dispose of asbestos?
Yes, at least in part. Nottinghamshire doesn't take all asbestos for free. The price depends on how much there is and how it's wrapped. The figures above are from the council's own guidance. Councils change their rates, so check before you travel.
Which parts of Nottinghamshire do you cover?
All of it. We arrange asbestos work in 15 towns and cities across Nottinghamshire, including Nottingham, Mansfield, Worksop and Newark on Trent, and in the villages around them. Wherever you are in the county, licensable work is done by HSE-licensed contractors.
Is asbestos likely in a Nottinghamshire property?
Around 79.7% of properties in Nottinghamshire (430,790 of 540,850) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999, so much of the county's housing dates from when it was still in use. Of those, the largest group was built between 1900 and 1939. That tells you nothing about one property. Only a survey or a lab test can show what's there. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
