Leeds City Council says asbestos can only be taken to its Kirkstall waste transfer station, Evanston Avenue, Leeds LS4 2HR, by appointment only, and not to its household waste recycling centres.

The full rule
  • It does not accept asbestos from trade or businesses, or from householders outside the Leeds area.
  • To book, email asbestos@leeds.gov.uk with your name, address, where the asbestos was removed from, your vehicle details, a contact number, the type and amount, and preferred dates at least 48 hours ahead.
  • The council then allocates a date and time by email, and you must visit at the allocated time or you will not be allowed entry.
  • The asbestos page gives opening hours of Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm, and Saturday, 8am to midday.
  • There is a charge: £72.31 for up to 200kg (the minimum price), £123.96 for 400kg, £175.61 for 600kg, £227.26 for 800kg and £278.91 for 1,000kg, by debit or credit card only, no cash or cheques.
  • All asbestos must be double wrapped in strong polythene of at least 1000 gauge and sealed with strong broad tape, or you will be turned away.
  • You must wear a high visibility jacket and protective footwear, report to the weighbridge for inspection of your load, and unload it yourself because staff cannot help.
  • A separate council page about its waste transfer stations says it does not accept asbestos at any of them, so confirm with the council when you book.
