Check what your council does with asbestos

Got a few pieces of asbestos cement that are already off the building? Your council may collect them or take them at a tip. Type your borough or area to see its rules.

Why the council route rarely fits a removal job

  • It has to be off the building already. The council collection doesn't take asbestos down or remove it.
  • You wrap it yourself. Each piece is wrapped and taped on its own. It's for residents only, not landlords or businesses.
  • Higher risk types are usually licensed work. HSE says sprayed coatings, lagging and insulating board should only be removed by an HSE-licensed contractor.

Place names: ONS Index of Place Names, Open Government Licence v3.0. Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.

London's buildings and asbestos

80.6% of London properties were built before 2000

That's 3,116,490 of 3,864,720, and asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. The largest group is flats and maisonettes, at 57.5%. None of that tells you about one property. Only a survey or a lab test can.

Asbestos Guides for London

The largest group of homes in London is flats and maisonettes, and the largest group by age was built between 1900 and 1939. In flats the material is as often in the parts nobody owns individually as it is inside any one home, which changes who is responsible for it.

Asbestos in London: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in London?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across London, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
How much does asbestos removal cost in London?
It depends on the job. Typical UK prices: Artex ceiling removal typically costs £600 to £1,350 per room, plus VAT. Asbestos floor tile removal typically costs £450 to £1,500 per room, plus VAT. Asbestos flue or flue pipe removal typically costs £250 to £500, plus VAT. The contractor sets the final price after seeing the job. Every quote is free.
Can you get asbestos removed for free in London?
Only small amounts of asbestos cement that are already off the building and wrapped. In every borough except Hillingdon, the City of London's hazardous waste collection will pick up wrapped asbestos cement from your home once a year. The first 15 square metres, or seven builders' rubble bags, are free. Anything more is charged by quote. Hillingdon runs its own collection instead. For 19 of the 32 boroughs, the council or its waste authority names a recycling centre that takes it, usually by booking. None of these council services takes asbestos off a building. We arrange removal across London, and every quote is free.
Can I remove asbestos myself?
HSE's advice to the public is not to remove asbestos yourself unless you've been trained. It strongly encourages using trained professionals. It says sprayed coatings, lagging and insulating board should only be removed by an HSE-licensed contractor. Asbestos cement, like a garage roof or a flue pipe, is usually non-licensed work. But HSE says even that should only be done with the right training and precautions.
Is asbestos likely in a London property?
Around 80.6% of properties in London (3,116,490 of 3,864,720) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1900 and 1939. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
