We arrange asbestos surveys, testing, removal, disposal and management throughout Watford, home to around 125,707 people, in Hertfordshire. Any property built or refurbished before the 1999 UK asbestos ban may contain asbestos-containing materials such as asbestos cement, insulating board (AIB) or textured coatings, so a survey is the only reliable way to confirm what is present before any work begins.
We also cover the surrounding area, including West Watford, Bushey, North Watford, Croxley Green, Batchworth and Abbots Langley.
Whether asbestos work needs a licensed contractor depends on the material and its condition. There are three categories under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012:
Higher-risk work where exposure is not sporadic or low-intensity. Must be carried out by an HSE-licensed contractor and notified to HSE on form ASB5 at least 14 days before work starts.
Examples: sprayed asbestos coatings (limpet), pipe and thermal lagging / insulation, loose-fill insulation, most work on asbestos insulating board (AIB).
Mid-risk work that does not need a licence but must be notified. Must be notified to the enforcing authority before work starts (no minimum notice period), with warning notices and health records kept.
Examples: removing a whole textured coating (Artex) using steam or gel, removing asbestos paper-backed floor tiles, larger asbestos cement jobs where fibre release is higher.
Lowest-risk work on firmly bonded materials in good condition. No licence or notification required, but the work must still be done safely under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
Examples: asbestos cement roof sheets, guttering and water tanks in good condition, bituminous products, textured coatings in good condition, gaskets and rope seals.
| Garage or outbuilding cement roof | £450–£1,500 (a single garage is often £450–£950) |

In Hertfordshire, small amounts of bonded (white) household asbestos are accepted at the Welwyn Garden City recycling centre on Fridays and the Ware centre on Mondays — one bag (max 20kg) per visit, once a year, and only by prior booking. It must be double-bagged in UN-approved asbestos packaging (a red inner bag plus a clear outer bag). The council's home-collection service ended in February 2025, so larger amounts or other types need a licensed contractor.

Asbestos removed by a contractor is business waste and cannot go through a household waste route — it must go to a permitted facility with a consignment note. When we carry out the work in Watford, safe disposal to a permitted facility is handled for you.
The duty to manage asbestos applies to non-domestic premises, and to the common or shared parts of residential blocks — not to individual private homes. Under Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, The dutyholder (whoever is responsible for maintenance and repair) must find or presume the asbestos, assess and record its condition, plan how to manage it, and tell anyone who could disturb it. This applies to commercial premises, rented housing and public buildings in Watford.
