Only a little, already taken down? What Berkshire says

Berkshire

Berkshire is covered by six councils and the rules vary.

The full rule
  • Reading, Wokingham and Bracknell Forest share the re3 sites (Smallmead and Longshot Lane), open only to people paying council tax to those three councils, with proof of address.
  • Make a separate asbestos booking between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday or 8am and 12 noon Saturday, then call re3 on 0800 988 3023 with the time.
  • Up to 60kg is free, then £8.40 per 20kg, and Bracknell Forest says payment on site is by pre-paid, debit or credit card only; double wrap it in thick plastic and seal.
  • Reading's own page instead lists asbestos within a free 100 litres of DIY waste per visit, so confirm the allowance with re3.
  • West Berkshire accepts up to 15 cement-bonded sheets (no bigger than 1.2m by 0.6m) in 12 months free at Newtown Road, Newbury, by appointment on 01635 519080; households must also register for a recycling centre permit; bring proof of address and photo ID, double bag or double wrap and tape it, and asbestos removed by a builder is refused.
  • Newtown Road refuses visits on foot and vehicles over 8.2m in combined length.
  • Slough (Chalvey) is for Slough residents with proof of address and photo ID, takes no more than 5 small sheets, dampened and double bagged or tightly wrapped, with the first two 1m by 1m sheets free then £4.80 per piece, card only.
  • Chalvey has a 1.7m height barrier, bars vans and pickups, limits trailers to 1.5m by 0.91m and does not let you carry waste in on foot.
  • Windsor and Maidenhead takes up to three sheets or sacks at Stafferton Way, Maidenhead, double wrapped and labelled, for borough residents only with an Advantage Card or photo ID and proof of residency; access is by vehicle only, there is a 2.1m height barrier and vans need a van permit.
  • Check your council's current rules.

Reading's own pages add: Reading Borough Council's bulky waste service does not take asbestos. re3 also says a commercial type vehicle needs a commercial vehicle permit and box vehicles are not permitted.

Your Local Asbestos Specialists in Reading

Reading, in Berkshire, grew in Victorian times and later became a big commercial centre. Victorian terraces tied to its brewing and biscuit-making past sit next to inter-war and post-war housing, office blocks and business parks. Much of this was built before the asbestos ban. So asbestos can be found in homes, flats and workplaces across the town. It usually causes no problem until it's disturbed.

Across Reading and the rest of Berkshire nearby, we arrange asbestos removal, surveys and testing. The specialist contractors we work with also reach Wokingham, Bracknell, Henley-on-Thames, Newbury and nearby Basingstoke. Renovating an older home, managing a let or refurbishing business buildings? Treat anything you suspect with care. Looks alone will never confirm asbestos, so get anything suspect surveyed or lab-tested before any work begins.

We cover the RG postcode area across Reading and the surrounding towns.

Reading's buildings and asbestos

76.6% of properties in Reading were built before 2000

That's 59,680 of 77,920. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Reading

In flats and maisonettes the risk is often in the parts nobody owns individually: service risers, ducting, communal cupboards and ceiling voids, where insulating board and lagging were widely used. Inside a flat, textured coatings and floor tiles are the common ones. That matters in Reading because flats and maisonettes are the largest group there, 38.5% of 77,920 properties, and around 76.6% of the stock predates the 1999 asbestos ban. The next largest group is terraced houses at 30.4%, where party walls and shared roof spaces mean neighbouring work can disturb material next door. One and two bedroom homes make up 48.4% of the stock, so a lot of it is flats and small conversions. The largest group was built since 2000. Property built from 2000 onwards is after the ban, so it should be free of asbestos as built. Anything older on the same plot, and any part retained from an earlier building, is a different matter. By period, 17.3% were built before 1900, 12.9% between 1919 and 1939 and 22.1% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Asbestos in Reading: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in Reading?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Reading and the wider Berkshire area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Reading property?
Around 76.6% of properties in Reading (59,680 of 77,920) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest single group was built since 2000, after the ban, but the older periods together make up that 76.6%. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
