Only a little, already taken down? What Hampshire says

Hampshire

In Hampshire, cement-bonded asbestos sheet is accepted at five sites, Andover, Basingstoke, Efford, Netley and Portsmouth, up to 15 sheets (each no bigger than 1200mm by 600mm), and you must phone the site in advance to pre-book.

The full rule
  • All visits to a Hampshire recycling centre must also be booked as an appointment, giving the household address the waste comes from.
  • It is free within your household DIY waste allowance, then £12 for each sheet or part sheet, card only.
  • A commercial type or larger vehicle may need a recycling centre permit, so check before you travel.
  • Wrap whole sheets securely in plastic sheeting and double-bag small or broken pieces.
  • Southampton's own recycling centre does not accept asbestos, so Southampton residents use one of the five.
  • Greater amounts and other types need an asbestos removal contractor.

Basingstoke and Deane's own pages add: Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council does not collect asbestos cement products through its bulky waste service. Its own page says a fee is charged at the recycling centre and does not mention the free DIY waste allowance that Hampshire County Council describes, so confirm the cost when you phone to pre-book.

More about the buildings around Basingstoke

The biggest group of homes in Basingstoke and Deane was built between 1965 and 1982. This is the peak period for asbestos in UK housing. Insulating board, textured coatings and asbestos cement were all in routine use, so original materials are common. Roughly 74.2% of the 82,400 properties here predate the 1999 ban, and the largest group by type is terraced houses at 29.2%. In terraced housing the materials that turn up most often are textured coatings on ceilings and walls, insulating board around fireplaces, airing cupboards and behind boilers, and asbestos cement in outbuildings, garage roofs, gutters and downpipes. The next largest group is detached houses at 24.3%, usually with a garage or outbuilding of its own to check. By period, 5.9% were built before 1900, 3.8% between 1919 and 1939 and 25.1% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Asbestos Specialists Covering Basingstoke

Basingstoke and Deane covers the town and a wide rural district around it, in the RG21 to RG29 postcode range. The town grew fast from the 1960s onwards. So much of its housing dates from the years when asbestos use peaked.

In practice, insulating board, textured coatings and asbestos cement in garages and outbuildings are more likely to be original to the building. Hampshire's recycling centres take cement-bonded sheet if you book by phone. It's free within the household allowance and charged after that. We arrange surveys, testing, removal and disposal across the district.

We also cover the surrounding area, including Tadley, Alton, Fleet, Yateley, Aldershot and Bordon.
