Only a little, already taken down? What Hampshire says

Hampshire

In Hampshire, cement-bonded asbestos sheet is accepted at five sites, Andover, Basingstoke, Efford, Netley and Portsmouth, up to 15 sheets (each no bigger than 1200mm by 600mm), and you must phone the site in advance to pre-book.

The full rule
  • All visits to a Hampshire recycling centre must also be booked as an appointment, giving the household address the waste comes from.
  • It is free within your household DIY waste allowance, then £12 for each sheet or part sheet, card only.
  • A commercial type or larger vehicle may need a recycling centre permit, so check before you travel.
  • Wrap whole sheets securely in plastic sheeting and double-bag small or broken pieces.
  • Southampton's own recycling centre does not accept asbestos, so Southampton residents use one of the five.
  • Greater amounts and other types need an asbestos removal contractor.

Southampton's own pages add: Southampton City Council's bulky waste collection does not take dangerous waste such as asbestos.

Asbestos Services Across Southampton

Southampton is a major port city in Hampshire, and large parts of it were rebuilt after heavy bombing in the Second World War. That rebuilding sits next to Victorian terraces, inter-war and post-war housing and industrial buildings by the docks. A large share of this was built before the asbestos ban. So asbestos can be in homes, flats and workplaces all over the city.

We cover Southampton and the surrounding parts of Hampshire, including Eastleigh, Totton, Romsey, Winchester and nearby Portsmouth. The specialist contractors we work with carry out asbestos removal, surveys and testing. Updating an older home, managing the shared parts of a block of flats or fitting out a business unit? Treat anything suspect with care. Asbestos can't be identified by eye, so anything doubtful should be surveyed or lab-tested before it's disturbed.

We cover the SO postcode area across Southampton and the surrounding towns.

Southampton's buildings and asbestos

83.7% of properties in Southampton were built before 2000

That's 93,560 of 111,740. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Southampton

In Southampton, flats and maisonettes are the largest group by some way: 44.6% of the 111,740 domestic properties on the Council Tax list, which is well above the national pattern. In flats and maisonettes the risk is often in the parts nobody owns individually: service risers, ducting, communal cupboards and ceiling voids, where insulating board and lagging were widely used. Inside a flat, textured coatings and floor tiles are the common ones. The next largest group is terraced houses at 22.4%, where party walls and shared roof spaces mean neighbouring work can disturb material next door. One and two bedroom homes make up 53.4% of the stock, so a lot of it is flats and small conversions. Around 83.7% of all property there predates the 1999 ban, and the largest group by age was built between 1900 and 1939. Property from this period was built before asbestos use peaked, so where asbestos is present it usually arrived with later work: post-war repairs, added textured coatings, new outbuilding roofs and heating upgrades. That later work is common enough in housing of this age that it still needs checking before anything is disturbed. By period, 11.7% were built before 1900, 18.4% between 1919 and 1939 and 15.9% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Asbestos in Southampton: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in Southampton?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Southampton and the wider Hampshire area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Southampton property?
Around 83.7% of properties in Southampton (93,560 of 111,740) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1900 and 1939. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
