Only a little, already taken down? What Dorset says

Dorset

In Dorset, the Dorset Council sites at Blandford, Wareham and Weymouth take bonded asbestos by pre-booked slot only, for small DIY repairs and not a whole roof: a one-off booking of 6 bags, or 4 bags and 1 sheet, or 2 bags and 2 sheets, or 3 sheets, with sheets no bigger than 6ft by 4ft.

The full rule
  • Dorset Council publishes no price for this.
  • Its hazardous waste policy says asbestos must be double-bagged and clearly labelled.
  • Its site policy says asbestos that is not properly contained cannot be accepted, certain vehicle types cannot unload without a vehicle permit, and you must not come in a van with a hire agreement of more than 3 days, with a trailer bed of more than 1.2m by 1.8m, or on foot unless site staff agree.
  • In the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) area, bonded asbestos counts towards the free weekly DIY allowance (up to 2 bags of 50 litres), then costs £10.50 per bag or £21 per sheet, double-wrapped in tough plastic and completely sealed; take identification showing you live in the BCP area (a current Council Tax bill, photocard driving licence or utility bill).
  • At the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole centres a van needs a valid permit or a hire agreement of no more than three days, and a trailer can be no bigger than 6ft by 4ft; the centre pages also list vehicles that are not allowed, including vans over 3.5 tonnes, vans or pick-ups towing trailers, Luton box vans, flatbed vans and tipper vehicles, and the car entrance at Poole has a height restriction of two metres.
  • Larger amounts need a waste company that deals with asbestos.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole's own pages add: BCP Council does not take asbestos on its bulky waste collection. The Christchurch recycling centre page says you will be turned away without identification.

Asbestos Specialists Covering Bournemouth

Bournemouth grew as a Victorian and Edwardian seaside resort in Dorset, and that history shapes its buildings. Large period villas and terraces, many now split into flats, sit alongside inter-war and post-war housing. A great deal of this was built before asbestos was banned. So asbestos can be in houses, converted flats and business buildings across the area.

We cover Bournemouth and the area around it, including Poole, Christchurch, Ferndown, Wimborne and Ringwood. We arrange asbestos surveys, testing and removal through the specialist contractors we work with. You might be updating a period home, looking after converted flats as a landlord or refurbishing a business. Start with caution. You can't tell if a material contains asbestos just by looking, so get a survey or a lab test before any work.

We cover the BH postcode area across Bournemouth and the surrounding towns.

Bournemouth's buildings and asbestos

83.7% of properties in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole were built before 2000

That's 159,520 of 190,630. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Bournemouth

In flats and maisonettes the risk is often in the parts nobody owns individually: service risers, ducting, communal cupboards and ceiling voids, where insulating board and lagging were widely used. Inside a flat, textured coatings and floor tiles are the common ones. That matters in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole because flats and maisonettes are the largest group there, 39.4% of 190,630 properties, and around 83.7% of the stock predates the 1999 asbestos ban. The next largest group is detached houses at 20.9%, usually with a garage or outbuilding of its own to check. One and two bedroom homes make up 51% of the stock, so a lot of it is flats and small conversions. The largest group was built between 1900 and 1939. Property from this period was built before asbestos use peaked, so where asbestos is present it usually arrived with later work: post-war repairs, added textured coatings, new outbuilding roofs and heating upgrades. That later work is common enough in housing of this age that it still needs checking before anything is disturbed. By period, 10.7% were built before 1900, 17.6% between 1919 and 1939 and 15.7% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

The largest group of homes in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole is flats and maisonettes, and the largest group by age was built between 1900 and 1939. In flats the material is as often in the parts nobody owns individually as it is inside any one home, which changes who is responsible for it.

Asbestos in Bournemouth: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in Bournemouth?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Bournemouth and the wider Dorset area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Bournemouth property?
Around 83.7% of properties in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (159,520 of 190,630) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1900 and 1939. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
