Only a little, already taken down? What Wiltshire says

Wiltshire

In Wiltshire, domestic cement-bonded asbestos from your own property is accepted by appointment only at three sites, Purton, Amesbury and Warminster; phone the site between 10am and 4pm to book (Amesbury 01980 623160, Purton 01793 778205, Warminster 01985 211427).

The full rule
  • You can bring up to 12 sheets, each no bigger than 1.5m by 2.5m, wrapped in plastic to stop dust, with proof of address.
  • Do not take it to any other centre or break it up, and bring help if you need it because staff cannot assist.
  • You must arrive in a vehicle because pedestrians are not permitted, and a van, pickup or large trailer needs a vehicle permit.
  • The Purton page also says you must book your visit before coming, under the council's booking pilot.
  • The council does not state a charge.
  • One council page shows the asbestos notice under Stanton St Quintin instead of Warminster, so confirm the site when you phone.

Salisbury's buildings and asbestos

76.7% of properties in the Wiltshire Council area were built before 2000

That's 179,630 of 234,170. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Salisbury

There are 234,170 domestic properties in the Wiltshire Council area, and around 76.7% of them were built before asbestos was fully banned in 1999. The largest single group was built since 2000. Property built from 2000 onwards is after the ban, so it should be free of asbestos as built. Anything older on the same plot, and any part retained from an earlier building, is a different matter. The largest group by type is detached houses (26.3%). In detached housing the usual places are outbuildings and garage roofs in asbestos cement, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board around boilers and airing cupboards, and cement soffits, flues and rainwater goods. The next largest group is semi-detached houses at 24.9%, usually with a garage or outbuilding of its own to check. By period, 16.6% were built before 1900, 7.2% between 1919 and 1939 and 22.8% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Our Salisbury coverage runs across SP1, SP2, SP4 and SP5, and out into the wider Wiltshire area: Amesbury, Bulford Camp, Wilton, Downton, Old Sarum, Morgan's Vale and Alderbury.

Asbestos Specialists Covering Salisbury

Salisbury is a Wiltshire city with a historic centre and post-war growth around it, in the SP1 to SP5 postcode districts.

Wiltshire takes household cement-bonded asbestos by appointment at three sites, none of them in Salisbury itself. There are limits on sheet size and amount. So disposal usually means a booked trip or a contractor collection. We arrange surveys, testing, removal and disposal across the city and the villages around it.

We also cover the surrounding area, including Amesbury, Tidworth, Warminster, Devizes, Westbury and Trowbridge.

Nearby areas we cover: Southampton, Bournemouth, Poole.

Is Your Asbestos Work Licensed?

It depends on the material, not on where you are. HSE puts the decision on the firm doing the work.

Asbestos in Salisbury: Common Questions

Which parts of Salisbury do you cover?
Yes. We arrange asbestos surveys, testing, removal, disposal and management across Salisbury, covering the SP1, SP2, SP4 and SP5 postcode districts and the wider Wiltshire area. We also cover Southampton, Bournemouth and Poole nearby. Licensable work is done by HSE-licensed contractors. Every enquiry starts with a free quote, with no obligation.
Is asbestos likely in a Salisbury property?
Around 76.7% of properties in the Wiltshire Council area (179,630 of 234,170) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest single group was built since 2000, after the ban, but the older periods together make up that 76.7%. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
