Swindon grew fast in the post-war decades and again in the 1970s and 1980s. The county also has a large stock of military housing around Salisbury Plain.

Swindon's railway works employed thousands and built the town around it. That housing dates from a time when asbestos lagging was handled every day. Elsewhere Wiltshire is rural and military, with a large defence estate around Salisbury Plain and farm buildings sheeted in asbestos cement. Chippenham, Trowbridge and Melksham each grew around their own light industry. The workshops, yards and depots left behind are a very different job from the housing around them.

Wiltshire has a newer stock than most of the counties we cover, though about 76.3% of its 337,020 properties still predate the 1999 ban, and among those 1965 to 1982 is the commonest period. A newer county average does not make any individual building safe, and only a survey or a laboratory test settles it.

The most common property type in Wiltshire is terraced houses, at about 26.1% of the stock, followed by semi-detached houses at 24.2%. In terraced housing built before the ban, extensions, outbuildings and replacement roofs are where asbestos cement and insulating board most often turn up.

Disposing of asbestos in Wiltshire

In Wiltshire, domestic cement-bonded asbestos from your own property is accepted by appointment only at three sites, Purton, Amesbury and Warminster; phone the site between 10am and 4pm to book (Amesbury 01980 623160, Purton 01793 778205, Warminster 01985 211427). You can bring up to 12 sheets, each no bigger than 1.5m by 2.5m, wrapped in plastic to stop dust, with proof of address. Do not take it to any other centre or break it up, and bring help if you need it because staff cannot assist. You must arrive in a vehicle because pedestrians are not permitted, and a van, pickup or large trailer needs a vehicle permit. The Purton page also says you must book your visit before coming, under the council's booking pilot. The council does not state a charge. One council page shows the asbestos notice under Stanton St Quintin instead of Warminster, so confirm the site when you phone. (council source, verified 2026-10-10)

Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.
