Only a little, already taken down? What Bristol says

Bristol

Bristol accepts only bonded asbestos at a recycling centre, and two council pages give different limits: the hazardous waste page says three sheets or three 25kg bags per visit or per week, whichever is less, and the what you can bring page says up to 1 sheet or 25kg bags per week, so confirm the limit with the council.

The full rule
  • That second page gives a price of £11 per sheet or bag, with 1 sheet of asbestos or plasterboard free at each visit (up to one free load per week), and a maximum sheet size of 3m by 1.5m.
  • Each sheet must be wrapped twice in heavy-duty polythene and sealed with tape, and smaller pieces put in two bags; unwrapped asbestos is refused.
  • Phone 0117 922 2100 first to check there is space in the skip.
  • You need to book a visit, paying online for chargeable waste when you book, and arrive in the vehicle you registered; the booking page says people coming by bike, or on foot at Hartcliffe Way, do not need to book but still need ID and proof of their Bristol address.
  • The centres are for Bristol residents only; bring photo ID and proof of address.
  • A van, pick-up or towing trailer over 1.52 metres needs a permit, which a business vehicle cannot get, and Avonmouth and St Philips cannot take vehicles over 2.4m high.
  • There is no collection service.
  • If a builder created the waste it is the builder's responsibility, and the council says not to dispose of it for them.

Asbestos Specialists Covering Bristol

Bristol is a unitary authority and one of the biggest cities in the South West. Its buildings run from Georgian and Victorian terraces to post-war housing and converted industrial and dockside buildings. A great deal of this was built well before asbestos was banned. So asbestos can be in homes, flats and business buildings across the city. It often sits there safely until building work disturbs it.

We arrange asbestos removal, surveys and testing across Bristol and the South West, through the specialist contractors we work with. That includes nearby Bath, Weston-super-Mare and Portishead. You might be renovating a period home, managing the shared parts of a block of flats or refurbishing a business. Either way, start by getting anything suspect surveyed or tested. How it looks never confirms asbestos. A survey or a lab test is the only way to be sure.

We cover the BS postcode area across Bristol and the surrounding towns.

Bristol's buildings and asbestos

81.2% of properties in Bristol were built before 2000

That's 174,190 of 214,470. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Bristol

There are 214,470 domestic properties in Bristol, and around 81.2% of them were built before asbestos was fully banned in 1999. The largest single group was built between 1900 and 1939. Property from this period was built before asbestos use peaked, so where asbestos is present it usually arrived with later work: post-war repairs, added textured coatings, new outbuilding roofs and heating upgrades. That later work is common enough in housing of this age that it still needs checking before anything is disturbed. The largest group by type is flats and maisonettes (39.2%). In flats and maisonettes the risk is often in the parts nobody owns individually: service risers, ducting, communal cupboards and ceiling voids, where insulating board and lagging were widely used. Inside a flat, textured coatings and floor tiles are the common ones. The next largest group is terraced houses at 34.2%, where party walls and shared roof spaces mean neighbouring work can disturb material next door. By period, 9.5% were built before 1900, 20% between 1919 and 1939 and 18.3% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Asbestos Guides for Bristol

Asbestos in Bristol: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in Bristol?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Bristol, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Bristol property?
Around 81.2% of properties in Bristol (174,190 of 214,470) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1900 and 1939. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
