Only a little, already taken down? What Devon says

Devon

Devon's recycling centres accept bonded, household-origin asbestos only, and there is a charge of £21.30 per sheet or bag (credit or debit card only), with no free allowance.

The full rule
  • The limit is 10 sheets or bags (sheets up to 3m by 1.5m), each sheet wrapped individually, double-wrapped in tough plastic and sealed with duct tape; site staff cannot help load it.
  • It is accepted at nine sites only: Bideford, Exeter (Pinbrook Road/Exton Road), Honiton, Kingsbridge, Newton Abbot, Okehampton, Tavistock, Tiverton and Torrington.
  • Ring 0345 1551010 to check availability for large sheets.
  • The service is for Devon County Council residents only, and waste created by a tradesperson or business at your home is not accepted.
  • Privately owned panel vans and flat-bed vans need a free van permit to enter, and vans registered to or used for a business are not admitted.
  • Asbestos that does not meet these rules must go to an authorised waste contractor.

Exeter's own pages add: Exeter City Council does not take asbestos on its bulky waste collection. The county list of asbestos sites includes Exeter (Pinbrook Road/Exton Road).

Your Local Asbestos Specialists in Exeter

Exeter is the cathedral city of Devon. Its Georgian and Victorian streets sit alongside a centre rebuilt after wartime bombing, plus inter-war and post-war suburbs. A great deal of this was built well before the asbestos ban. So asbestos can be found in homes, flats and business buildings across the city. It usually causes no problem until it's disturbed.

Across Exeter and the surrounding parts of Devon, we arrange asbestos removal, surveys and testing. The specialist contractors we work with also reach Exmouth, Topsham, Tiverton, Cullompton, Crediton and Dawlish. Renovating a period home, managing a let or fitting out a business? The safe first step is the same for everyone. You can't tell if a material contains asbestos by looking, so have anything suspect surveyed or tested in a lab before work starts.

We cover the EX postcode area across Exeter and the surrounding towns.

Exeter's buildings and asbestos

74.3% of properties in Exeter were built before 2000

That's 45,920 of 61,790. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Exeter

In flats and maisonettes the risk is often in the parts nobody owns individually: service risers, ducting, communal cupboards and ceiling voids, where insulating board and lagging were widely used. Inside a flat, textured coatings and floor tiles are the common ones. That matters in Exeter because flats and maisonettes are the largest group there, 32.5% of 61,790 properties, and around 74.3% of the stock predates the 1999 asbestos ban. The next largest group is terraced houses at 32.3%, where party walls and shared roof spaces mean neighbouring work can disturb material next door. The largest group was built since 2000. Property built from 2000 onwards is after the ban, so it should be free of asbestos as built. Anything older on the same plot, and any part retained from an earlier building, is a different matter. By period, 13.8% were built before 1900, 13.6% between 1919 and 1939 and 25.3% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Asbestos in Exeter: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in Exeter?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Exeter and the wider Devon area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Exeter property?
Around 74.3% of properties in Exeter (45,920 of 61,790) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest single group was built since 2000, after the ban, but the older periods together make up that 74.3%. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
