Only a little, already taken down? What Hertfordshire says

Hertfordshire

In Hertfordshire, small amounts of bonded white (chrysotile) household asbestos are accepted at the Welwyn Garden City recycling centre on Fridays and the Ware centre on Mondays, one bag (max 20kg) per visit, once a year, and only by prior booking.

The full rule
  • The service is for Hertfordshire residents only, so bring proof of address, and a van or trailer needs an ePass.
  • It must be double-bagged and taped in UN-approved asbestos packaging (a red inner bag with asbestos warnings plus a clear outer bag); bin bags and torn packaging are refused.
  • The county's page does not state a charge.
  • The council's home collection service ended on 21 February 2025, so if you have more than 20kg, or another type, use a private contractor.

St Albans's own pages add: St Albans City and District Council's page says never to take asbestos to Household Waste and Recycling Centres. That is out of date: Hertfordshire County Council accepts small quantities at Ware and Welwyn Garden City recycling centres by prior booking only. St Albans does not collect asbestos, and gives the WasteAware helpline as 0300 1234 051.

Cost: no charge published Council's own pageChecked Oct 2026

St Albans's buildings and asbestos

83.2% of properties in the St Albans council area were built before 2000

That's 52,970 of 63,700. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around St Albans

The biggest group of homes in the St Albans council area was built between 1945 and 1964. This is the period when asbestos use in British building was climbing steeply, so original materials are more likely to be present rather than added later. Roughly 83.2% of the 63,700 properties here predate the 1999 ban, and the largest group by type is flats and maisonettes at 24.7%. In flats and maisonettes the risk is often in the parts nobody owns individually: service risers, ducting, communal cupboards and ceiling voids, where insulating board and lagging were widely used. Inside a flat, textured coatings and floor tiles are the common ones. The next largest group is semi-detached houses at 24%, usually with a garage or outbuilding of its own to check. By period, 8.8% were built before 1900, 16.3% between 1919 and 1939 and 15.8% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Our St Albans coverage runs across AL1, AL2, AL3, AL4 and AL5, and out into the wider City and District of St. Albans area: Harpenden, London Colney, Chiswell Green, Redbourn, Wheathampstead, Bricket Wood and Park Street and Frogmore.

Asbestos Specialists Covering St Albans

St Albans covers the AL1 to AL5 postcode districts. The district also takes in Harpenden, London Colney, Redbourn, Wheathampstead and Bricket Wood. Most of its housing is older, and that's the part that matters here.

Around 83% of local property was built before the 1999 asbestos ban. In practice that means textured coatings on ceilings, and insulating board in airing cupboards and around boilers. It also means asbestos cement in garages, sheds, soffits, gutters and downpipes. We arrange surveys, sampling, removal and disposal across the district. We always start by finding out what a material really is.

We also cover the surrounding area, including Abbots Langley, Harpenden, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, North Watford and Welwyn Garden City.

We also cover Watford, Luton and London nearby. Licensable work is done by HSE-licensed contractors. Every enquiry starts with a free quote, with no obligation.
Is asbestos likely in a St Albans property?
Around 83.2% of properties in the St Albans council area (52,970 of 63,700) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1945 and 1964. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
