Only a little, already taken down? What Essex says

Essex

Essex does not accept asbestos at any recycling centre or in kerbside collections.

The full rule
  • Instead, Essex County Council offers a subsidised collection of asbestos from your own household, one per household each financial year, requested through the online form on the Love Essex site (contact the county council if you cannot use the form).
  • The county does not publish the price or a weight limit on its page, so confirm both when you request a collection.
  • Southend does not provide a collection or disposal service and says residents must use a specialist contractor.
  • Thurrock cannot remove asbestos for you or take it at its Linford centre: residents there can use a removal contractor, or find a privately operated waste disposal site that accepts asbestos, phoning ahead to check it will take the waste and what it charges.

Basildon's own pages add: Basildon Council does not collect asbestos in its bulky waste service. Its page describes the Essex County Council collection as being for bonded asbestos (asbestos cement), with a subsidy on collection costs taken off your bill before payment if you qualify, so ask the county what you will pay when you request a collection.

Basildon's buildings and asbestos

86.6% of properties in the Basildon council area were built before 2000

That's 69,830 of 80,600. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Basildon

The biggest group of homes in the Basildon council area was built between 1945 and 1964. This is the period when asbestos use in British building was climbing steeply, so original materials are more likely to be present rather than added later. Roughly 86.6% of the 80,600 properties here predate the 1999 ban, and the largest group by type is terraced houses at 36.1%. In terraced housing the materials that turn up most often are textured coatings on ceilings and walls, insulating board around fireplaces, airing cupboards and behind boilers, and asbestos cement in outbuildings, garage roofs, gutters and downpipes. By period, 0.6% were built before 1900, 3.6% between 1919 and 1939 and 13.1% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Our Basildon coverage runs across SS13, SS14, SS15 and SS16, and out into the wider Basildon area: North Benfleet, Noak Bridge, Noak Hill, Bowers Gifford and North Benfleet, Thundersley and South Benfleet and Ramsden Crays.

Asbestos Specialists Covering Basildon

Basildon is an Essex new town, and its housing shows it. A large share was built in the post-war decades, when asbestos was in routine use in British building.

Essex is also one of the councils that won't take asbestos at any recycling centre. It runs a subsidised home collection instead, so disposal has to be arranged, not driven to a tip. We cover the SS13 to SS16 districts. We arrange surveys, sampling, removal and licensed disposal through suitably licensed contractors.

We also cover the surrounding area, including Pitsea, Stanford-le-Hope, Wickford, Billericay, South Benfleet and Canvey Island.

Basildon is in Essex.

Is Your Asbestos Work Licensed?

It depends on the material, not on where you are. HSE puts the decision on the firm doing the work.

Is asbestos likely in a Basildon property?
Around 86.6% of properties in the Basildon council area (69,830 of 80,600) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1945 and 1964. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
