Only a little, already taken down? What Essex says

Essex

Essex does not accept asbestos at any recycling centre or in kerbside collections.

The full rule
  • Instead, Essex County Council offers a subsidised collection of asbestos from your own household, one per household each financial year, requested through the online form on the Love Essex site (contact the county council if you cannot use the form).
  • The county does not publish the price or a weight limit on its page, so confirm both when you request a collection.
  • Southend does not provide a collection or disposal service and says residents must use a specialist contractor.
  • Thurrock cannot remove asbestos for you or take it at its Linford centre: residents there can use a removal contractor, or find a privately operated waste disposal site that accepts asbestos, phoning ahead to check it will take the waste and what it charges.

Colchester's own pages add: Colchester City Council points residents to the Essex County Council collection and advises sealing asbestos in UN approved packaging (a red inner bag with asbestos warnings and a clear outer bag), or double wrapping large pieces in 1000 gauge polythene. It gives a county hotline of 0845 603 7625; the county's own contact page lists 0345 743 0430.

Your Local Asbestos Specialists in Colchester

Colchester, in Essex, is one of Britain's oldest recorded towns and a long-standing garrison, and its buildings reflect that long history. Older streets sit beside Victorian terraces, inter-war and post-war housing, military barracks and businesses. A large share of this was built before the asbestos ban. So asbestos can be found in homes, flats and workplaces across the city.

We cover Colchester and the surrounding parts of Essex, including Clacton-on-Sea, Braintree, Sudbury and nearby Ipswich and Chelmsford. The specialist contractors we work with carry out asbestos removal, surveys and testing. Renovating an older home, managing a let or refurbishing business buildings? Treat anything suspect with respect. You can't tell if something contains asbestos by looking at it, so get a survey or a lab test before any work.

We cover the CO postcode area across Colchester and the surrounding towns.

Colchester's buildings and asbestos

73.4% of properties in the Colchester council area were built before 2000

That's 63,970 of 87,210. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Colchester

In semi-detached housing the most common finds are asbestos cement garage and shed roofs, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board in airing cupboards and around boilers, and cement soffits and rainwater goods. That matters in the Colchester council area because semi-detached houses are the largest group there, 23.2% of 87,210 properties, and around 73.4% of the stock predates the 1999 asbestos ban. The next largest group is flats and maisonettes at 22.2%, which puts part of the risk in communal risers and ceiling voids rather than inside any one home. The largest group was built since 2000. Property built from 2000 onwards is after the ban, so it should be free of asbestos as built. Anything older on the same plot, and any part retained from an earlier building, is a different matter. By period, 9.7% were built before 1900, 8.1% between 1919 and 1939 and 26.4% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Asbestos in Colchester: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in Colchester?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Colchester and the wider Essex area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Colchester property?
Around 73.4% of properties in the Colchester council area (63,970 of 87,210) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest single group was built since 2000, after the ban, but the older periods together make up that 73.4%. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
