Only a little, already taken down? What Suffolk says

Suffolk

In Suffolk, householders book a paid collection (run for the county by Biffa) for cement-bonded asbestos from their own home, up to 50kg: £36 plus a collection charge of £53 (within 25 working days) or £62 (within 10 working days), paid before collection.

The full rule
  • Sheets can be up to about 1.8 metres by 0.9 metres and must be individually wrapped in 1000-gauge polythene, one sheet per wrapping, sealed with strong tape and labelled with an asbestos warning; small offcuts go in tied and sealed builders rubble bags of no more than 25kg each.
  • Each item must be easy for one person to lift, no item over 50kg is accepted, punctured or split packaging is not collected, and items not listed on the booking form are not taken.
  • Over 50kg you may be charged for additional collections.
  • Fibrous (non-cement-bonded) asbestos is not collected.
  • East Suffolk Council states that asbestos cannot be taken to household waste recycling centres.

Ipswich's own pages add: Ipswich Borough Council describes the Suffolk collection as being for small items such as a water tank, up to 3 roofing sheets or a length of downpipe, and says asbestos from a dismantled shed, garage or outhouse needs a registered asbestos contractor. Suffolk County Council's own page sets a 50kg limit instead, so check with the county first.

Asbestos Services Across Ipswich

Ipswich is a historic port town in Suffolk, with buildings from many eras. Older streets near the waterfront sit beside Victorian terraces, inter-war and post-war housing and industrial and business units by the docks. Much of this was built before asbestos was banned. So asbestos can be in homes, flats and workplaces across the town. It generally causes no problem until it's disturbed.

We cover Ipswich and the surrounding parts of Suffolk, including Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Stowmarket, Needham Market and nearby Colchester. We arrange asbestos surveys, testing and removal through the specialist contractors we work with. Updating an older home, managing the shared parts of a block of flats or refurbishing a business? Treat anything you suspect with care. There's no way to spot asbestos by sight, so have anything suspect surveyed or lab-tested before work starts.

We cover the IP postcode area across Ipswich and the surrounding towns.

Ipswich's buildings and asbestos

81.6% of properties in Ipswich were built before 2000

That's 51,370 of 62,930. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Ipswich

In semi-detached housing the most common finds are asbestos cement garage and shed roofs, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board in airing cupboards and around boilers, and cement soffits and rainwater goods. That matters in Ipswich because semi-detached houses are the largest group there, 31% of 62,930 properties, and around 81.6% of the stock predates the 1999 asbestos ban. The next largest group is terraced houses at 26.8%, where party walls and shared roof spaces mean neighbouring work can disturb material next door. The largest group was built between 1900 and 1939. Property from this period was built before asbestos use peaked, so where asbestos is present it usually arrived with later work: post-war repairs, added textured coatings, new outbuilding roofs and heating upgrades. That later work is common enough in housing of this age that it still needs checking before anything is disturbed. By period, 14.9% were built before 1900, 22.3% between 1919 and 1939 and 18.3% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

The largest group of homes in Ipswich is semi-detached housing, and the largest group by age was built between 1900 and 1939. Semi-detached houses built before the ban very often came with a garage or an outbuilding, and that is usually where the cement sheeting is.

Asbestos in Ipswich: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in Ipswich?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Ipswich and the wider Suffolk area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Ipswich property?
Around 81.6% of properties in Ipswich (51,370 of 62,930) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1900 and 1939. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
