Only a little, already taken down? What Essex says

Essex

Essex does not accept asbestos at any recycling centre or in kerbside collections.

The full rule
  • Instead, Essex County Council offers a subsidised collection of asbestos from your own household, one per household each financial year, requested through the online form on the Love Essex site (contact the county council if you cannot use the form).
  • The county does not publish the price or a weight limit on its page, so confirm both when you request a collection.
  • Southend does not provide a collection or disposal service and says residents must use a specialist contractor.
  • Thurrock cannot remove asbestos for you or take it at its Linford centre: residents there can use a removal contractor, or find a privately operated waste disposal site that accepts asbestos, phoning ahead to check it will take the waste and what it charges.

Chelmsford's own pages add: Chelmsford City Council does not collect asbestos and confirms you cannot take it to your local recycling centre. Request an asbestos collection from Essex County Council.

Cost: no charge published Council's own pageChecked Oct 2026

Your Local Asbestos Specialists in Chelmsford

Chelmsford is the county town and city of Essex, with an older core and plenty of later growth. Victorian terraces, inter-war and post-war housing and industrial and engineering premises from the area's manufacturing past are all common here. Much of this was built before asbestos was banned. So asbestos can be in homes, flats and workplaces across the city.

We arrange asbestos surveys, testing and removal across Chelmsford and Essex, through the specialist contractors we work with. That includes Brentwood, Braintree, Basildon, Billericay and nearby Colchester. Improving an older home, meeting a landlord's obligations or refurbishing a business? The safe first step is the same. Asbestos can't be spotted by eye, so anything doubtful must be surveyed or lab-tested before it's disturbed.

We cover the CM postcode area across Chelmsford and the surrounding towns.

77.2% of properties in the Chelmsford council area were built before 2000

More about the buildings around Chelmsford

The biggest group of homes in the Chelmsford council area was built between 1965 and 1982. This is the peak period for asbestos in UK housing. Insulating board, textured coatings and asbestos cement were all in routine use, so original materials are common. Roughly 77.2% of the 82,430 properties here predate the 1999 ban, and the largest group by type is detached houses at 24.1%. In detached housing the usual places are outbuildings and garage roofs in asbestos cement, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board around boilers and airing cupboards, and cement soffits, flues and rainwater goods. The next largest group is semi-detached houses at 23.4%, usually with a garage or outbuilding of its own to check. By period, 4.9% were built before 1900, 9.8% between 1919 and 1939 and 22.5% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
