Harlow and Basildon were built as new towns through the 1950s and 1960s. Those were the peak years for asbestos insulating board and textured coatings, and many of those first homes are still lived in.

Harlow and Basildon were built fast, using factory-made methods. That's exactly where asbestos insulating board was used for fire protection in flats, schools and public buildings. Along the Thames at Grays and Tilbury, the older industrial buildings are a different problem. Sprayed coatings and pipe lagging are more likely there.

The most common property type in Essex is terraced houses, at about 23.1% of the stock, followed by semi-detached houses at 22%. In terraced housing built before the ban, extensions, outbuildings and replacement roofs are where asbestos cement and insulating board most often turn up.

Managing & Disposing of Asbestos in Essex

Disposing of asbestos in Essex

Essex does not accept asbestos at any recycling centre or in kerbside collections. Instead, Essex County Council offers a subsidised collection of asbestos from your own household, one per household each financial year, requested through the online form on the Love Essex site (contact the county council if you cannot use the form). The county does not publish the price or a weight limit on its page, so confirm both when you request a collection. Southend does not provide a collection or disposal service and says residents must use a specialist contractor. Thurrock cannot remove asbestos for you or take it at its Linford centre: residents there can use a removal contractor, or find a privately operated waste disposal site that accepts asbestos, phoning ahead to check it will take the waste and what it charges. Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.
