Only a little, already taken down? What Kent says

Kent

Kent's recycling centres accept small quantities of household asbestos free of charge, no more than 5 sacks (or equivalent) per month, at all Kent sites except Sheerness.

The full rule
  • It must be double wrapped in heavy duty plastic bags or sheeting and secured with tape, not sticking out of the packaging, no more than 10 feet (3 metres) by 5 feet (1.5 metres), and kept damp.
  • You must book a slot before visiting (same day or up to two weeks ahead) and bring your booking reference.
  • Vans and vehicles over 2 metres high need a vehicle voucher to enter, and non-Kent residents, including Medway, pay £10 per visit.
  • Wear protective gloves and a face mask and do not break or cut it.
  • The asbestos container is kept locked, so ask a member of staff, who will ask you to declare it is from your own home and cannot help you lift it.
  • For large quantities, or if you need it collected, use a licensed contractor.

Maidstone's own pages add: Maidstone Borough Council does not remove asbestos and its bulky collection does not take hazardous waste. It says you can take asbestos to Tovil Recycling Centre, and you can contact the council for advice on the best way to get rid of it.

Asbestos Services Across Maidstone

Maidstone is the county town of Kent, with a long history and plenty of later growth. Older streets sit beside Victorian terraces, inter-war and post-war housing and industrial premises from the area's paper-making and brewing past. A large share of this was built before the asbestos ban. So asbestos can be found in homes, flats and workplaces across the town.

We cover Maidstone and the surrounding parts of Kent, including Chatham, Rochester, Ashford, Tonbridge and Sittingbourne. The specialist contractors we work with carry out asbestos removal, surveys and testing. Renovating an older home, managing a let or refurbishing business buildings? Treat anything you suspect with care. You can't tell if a material contains asbestos by sight, so get a survey or a lab test before any work begins.

We cover the ME postcode area across Maidstone and the surrounding towns.

Maidstone's buildings and asbestos

73.1% of properties in the Maidstone council area were built before 2000

That's 57,920 of 79,180. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Maidstone

In semi-detached housing the most common finds are asbestos cement garage and shed roofs, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board in airing cupboards and around boilers, and cement soffits and rainwater goods. That matters in the Maidstone council area because semi-detached houses are the largest group there, 25.8% of 79,180 properties, and around 73.1% of the stock predates the 1999 asbestos ban. The next largest group is terraced houses at 24.1%, where party walls and shared roof spaces mean neighbouring work can disturb material next door. The largest group was built since 2000. Property built from 2000 onwards is after the ban, so it should be free of asbestos as built. Anything older on the same plot, and any part retained from an earlier building, is a different matter. By period, 13.8% were built before 1900, 10% between 1919 and 1939 and 26.2% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Asbestos in Maidstone: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in Maidstone?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Maidstone and the wider Kent area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Maidstone property?
Around 73.1% of properties in the Maidstone council area (57,920 of 79,180) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest single group was built since 2000, after the ban, but the older periods together make up that 73.1%. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
