Kirklees Council tells residents to take asbestos waste to Emerald Street Household Waste Recycling Centre, off Hillhouse Lane, Huddersfield, and takes it at none of its other sites.

The full rule
  • Emerald Street is open 7 days a week.
  • You must book before you visit: bookings can be made up to 6 days in advance and each household has 12 visits per calendar year.
  • The service is not available to commercial operators.
  • Your vehicle must be registered for a Kirklees vehicle permit, and staff check the registration number when you arrive.
  • With a hire vehicle you do not need a permit, but you will be asked to show a Council Tax or utility bill with the same address as the hire agreement.
  • You must wrap asbestos cement in a double layer of strong polythene and seal loose edges with tape before taking it to the disposal skip.
  • The council's advice covers asbestos cement only, and for anything other than garage roof and wall sheets, guttering or fall pipes it points you to specialist companies.
  • Camper vans under 2 metres high, vans under 3 tonnes and pickups need a large vehicle permit, and a trailer may be up to 6 feet long with a single axle.
  • Vans over 3 tonnes, box type vans, tippers, dropside and flat-bed vehicles, minibuses and camper vans over 2 metres high are prohibited.
  • The council does not publish a charge for asbestos.
  • Its bulky waste collection will not collect asbestos.
