Only a little, already taken down? What York says

York

City of York Council accepts wrapped bonded asbestos from York householders at Hazel Court recycling centre, but there is a charge that depends on the amount (see the council's chargeable-waste guidance), paid at the site by debit or credit card only.

The full rule
  • The site is closed every Wednesday.
  • Booking is required, there is only one secure asbestos container and space is not always available, so call the Customer Centre on 01904 551551 first.
  • It must be double-wrapped in heavy-duty plastic with nothing protruding.
  • Asbestos removed by a tradesperson is not accepted.
  • Pickups, vans and all trailers need a permit, which can take up to 10 working days to arrive; the height barrier is 1.9 metres, and pedestrians and cyclists are not allowed onto the main site.
  • A householder-only collection service is also available for those who can't transport it; other asbestos types (e.g. insulation board) should go to a licensed contractor.
Cost: charged Council's own pageChecked Oct 2026

Asbestos Services Across York

York, in North Yorkshire, is a historic city that has grown outward from its medieval core. Around the old centre are Victorian terraces tied to its railway and chocolate-making past, inter-war and post-war housing and businesses. Much of this was built before asbestos was banned. So asbestos can be in homes, flats and workplaces across the city. It generally causes no problem until it's disturbed.

We cover York and the area around it, including Harrogate, Selby, Tadcaster, Malton and Wetherby. We arrange asbestos surveys, testing and removal through the specialist contractors we work with. Working on a period home, managing the shared parts of a block of flats or refurbishing a business? Begin carefully. Asbestos can't be identified by eye, so anything suspect must be surveyed or lab-tested before it's disturbed.

We cover the YO postcode area across York and the surrounding towns.

York's buildings and asbestos

82% of properties in the York council area were built before 2000

That's 77,450 of 94,410. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around York

The biggest group of homes in the York council area was built between 1945 and 1964. This is the period when asbestos use in British building was climbing steeply, so original materials are more likely to be present rather than added later. Roughly 82% of the 94,410 properties here predate the 1999 ban, and the largest group by type is terraced houses at 26.2%. In terraced housing the materials that turn up most often are textured coatings on ceilings and walls, insulating board around fireplaces, airing cupboards and behind boilers, and asbestos cement in outbuildings, garage roofs, gutters and downpipes. The next largest group is semi-detached houses at 25.1%, usually with a garage or outbuilding of its own to check. By period, 14.2% were built before 1900, 16.2% between 1919 and 1939 and 17.7% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Asbestos in York: Common Questions

Do you provide asbestos services in York?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across York and the wider North Yorkshire area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a York property?
Around 82% of properties in the York council area (77,450 of 94,410) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1945 and 1964. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
