Only a little, already taken down? What Hull says

Hull

Hull City Council accepts asbestos only at the Wiltshire Road household waste and recycling centre, where you deposit it into the asbestos container yourself and follow the instructions of site staff.

The full rule
  • It must be double-bagged, wrapped and sealed in suitable heavy-duty plastic bags (such as soil, rubble or garden waste bags) or heavy-duty plastic sheeting.
  • Site staff inspect the bags, and split, unsealed or weak bags are not accepted.
  • Carrier bags, hessian bags, pedal bin liners or similar lightweight black plastic bags, cling film and bubble wrap are not accepted.
  • To use the site you need a Hull residents' pass displayed in your car, or proof of a Hull address such as a recent utility bill, Council Tax bill or driving licence, and a van or trailer needs a permit.
  • The council does not publish a charge.

Asbestos Specialists Covering Kingston upon Hull

Kingston upon Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, is a port and former fishing city. Wartime bombing and later rebuilding changed much of it. Post-war housing and rebuilding sit beside surviving Victorian terraces, inter-war estates and industrial units by the docks. A large share of this was built before the asbestos ban. So asbestos can be found in homes, flats and workplaces across the city.

Across Hull and the East Riding, we arrange asbestos removal, surveys and testing. The specialist contractors we work with also reach Beverley, Cottingham, Hessle, Hedon and, across the Humber, Grimsby. Renovating an older home, managing a let or refurbishing a business? Treat anything you suspect with care. You can't tell asbestos from an ordinary material by looking, so get a survey or a lab test before any work.

We cover the HU postcode area across Kingston upon Hull and the surrounding towns.

More about the buildings around Kingston upon Hull

In Kingston upon Hull, terraced houses are the largest group by some way: 52.4% of the 125,820 domestic properties on the Council Tax list, which is well above the national pattern. In terraced housing the materials that turn up most often are textured coatings on ceilings and walls, insulating board around fireplaces, airing cupboards and behind boilers, and asbestos cement in outbuildings, garage roofs, gutters and downpipes. Around 86.8% of all property there predates the 1999 ban, and the largest group by age was built between 1900 and 1939. Property from this period was built before asbestos use peaked, so where asbestos is present it usually arrived with later work: post-war repairs, added textured coatings, new outbuilding roofs and heating upgrades. That later work is common enough in housing of this age that it still needs checking before anything is disturbed. By period, 12.9% were built before 1900, 22.7% between 1919 and 1939 and 13.1% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.
