Only a little, already taken down? What Lincolnshire says

Lincolnshire

In Lincolnshire, asbestos cannot go to the county's household waste recycling centres.

The full rule
  • Lincolnshire County Council runs a free, appointment-only service, Monday to Friday, for white (chrysotile) bonded asbestos at specialist locations in Lincoln and Skegness, up to 20kg sealed in the bag the council sends you, two deposits per household per year; it cannot collect from your home.
  • North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire are separate councils with their own rules, at the Scunthorpe and Grimsby recycling centres.
  • Other types need a licensed contractor.

Lincoln's own pages add: City of Lincoln Council does not remove, dispose of or transport asbestos from homes. It says you must either use a private contractor who is licensed and registered, or use the free white asbestos disposal service for small amounts run by Lincolnshire County Council, which must be pre-booked.

Lincoln's buildings and asbestos

79.9% of properties in Lincoln were built before 2000

That's 38,220 of 47,850. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Lincoln

In terraced housing the materials that turn up most often are textured coatings on ceilings and walls, insulating board around fireplaces, airing cupboards and behind boilers, and asbestos cement in outbuildings, garage roofs, gutters and downpipes. That matters in Lincoln because terraced houses are the largest group there, 33.5% of 47,850 properties, and around 79.9% of the stock predates the 1999 asbestos ban. The next largest group is flats and maisonettes at 24.9%, which puts part of the risk in communal risers and ceiling voids rather than inside any one home. The largest group was built since 2000. Property built from 2000 onwards is after the ban, so it should be free of asbestos as built. Anything older on the same plot, and any part retained from an earlier building, is a different matter. By period, 16.1% were built before 1900, 11.3% between 1919 and 1939 and 19.6% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Our Lincoln coverage runs across LN1, LN2, LN3, LN5 and LN6, and out into the wider Lincoln area: North Hykeham.

Is Your Asbestos Work Licensed?

It depends on the material, not on where you are. HSE puts the decision on the firm doing the work.

We also cover Mansfield, Nottingham and Doncaster nearby. Licensable work is done by HSE-licensed contractors. Every enquiry starts with a free quote, with no obligation.
Is asbestos likely in a Lincoln property?
Around 79.9% of properties in Lincoln (38,220 of 47,850) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest single group was built since 2000, after the ban, but the older periods together make up that 79.9%. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
