Asbestos Specialists Across Lincolnshire

Scunthorpe's steelworks and the docks and fishing industry at Grimsby and Immingham used a lot of asbestos insulation. It was also standard on the county's farm buildings.

Lincolnshire is a big farming county. So asbestos cement roofs and sheeting on barns and outbuildings are widespread, alongside post-war housing in the towns.

Scunthorpe and Grimsby have heavy industrial and dockside buildings, where lagging and sprayed insulation were used at scale. Lincoln's engineering works add another layer. The holiday coast at Skegness and Mablethorpe is its own case. Chalets, static caravan sites and holiday lets were often built or re-clad when cement sheeting was the cheapest way to cover a roof. Stamford and Louth keep older centres of their own, where asbestos came in with later repairs and extensions, not the original build.

Lincolnshire has a newer stock than most of the counties we cover, though about 76.5% of its 525,690 properties still predate the 1999 ban, and among those 1965 to 1982 is the commonest period. A newer county average does not make any individual building safe, and only a survey or a laboratory test settles it.

The most common property type in Lincolnshire is semi-detached houses, at about 24.5% of the stock, followed by detached houses at 23.2%. Semi-detached houses built before the ban frequently have an asbestos cement garage roof or a sectional outbuilding, which is among the most common things we are asked to remove.

Managing & Disposing of Asbestos in Lincolnshire

It applies to business premises, public buildings and the shared parts of blocks of flats right across Lincolnshire. What the duty to manage requires is set out in full in our guide for landlords and businesses.

Disposing of asbestos in Lincolnshire

In Lincolnshire, asbestos cannot go to the county's household waste recycling centres. Lincolnshire County Council runs a free, appointment-only service, Monday to Friday, for white (chrysotile) bonded asbestos at specialist locations in Lincoln and Skegness, up to 20kg sealed in the bag the council sends you, two deposits per household per year; it cannot collect from your home. North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire are separate councils with their own rules, at the Scunthorpe and Grimsby recycling centres. Other types need a licensed contractor. (council source, verified 2026-10-11)

Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.

Asbestos waste is classed as hazardous (special) waste. So there are rules on how it's wrapped, labelled, carried and recorded. We set them out in full in our disposal guide.

Councils across Lincolnshire set their own rules for households. When we arrange the work, disposal is handled for you. For the rules where you live, see our asbestos disposal by council lookup, or check typical prices in the UK asbestos removal cost report.

Asbestos Guides for Lincolnshire

The largest group of homes in Lincolnshire is semi-detached houses, and of the homes built before 2000 the largest group went up between 1965 and 1982. Semi-detached houses built before the ban very often came with a garage or an outbuilding, and that is usually where the cement sheeting is.

Asbestos in Lincolnshire: Common Questions

Where can I dispose of asbestos in Lincolnshire?
Through Lincolnshire, under its own rules on amount, wrapping and booking, which you'll find above. When we arrange the work, it's taken to a permitted site for you instead.
Which parts of Lincolnshire do you cover?
All of it. We arrange asbestos work in 17 towns and cities across Lincolnshire, including Lincoln, Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Boston, and in the villages around them. Wherever you are in the county, licensable work is done by HSE-licensed contractors.
Is asbestos likely in a Lincolnshire property?
Around 76.5% of properties in Lincolnshire (402,010 of 525,690) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999, so much of the county's housing dates from when it was still in use. Of those, the largest group was built between 1965 and 1982. That tells you nothing about one property. Only a survey or a lab test can show what's there. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
