The chemical works along the Mersey at Runcorn and Widnes used a lot of asbestos lagging and fire protection. So did the salt and soda industry around Northwich and Winsford.

Warrington and Runcorn were both made new towns and built out through the 1960s and 1970s. Chester, Macclesfield and the market towns keep much older centres.

Crewe grew around the railway works, and the housing built for its workers still stands. It dates from a time when asbestos lagging was handled as a matter of routine. The Cheshire plain around Nantwich, Sandbach and Knutsford is farmland, where asbestos cement sheets on barns and outbuildings are the more common find. Ellesmere Port grew around the Manchester Ship Canal and the oil refining and car-making beside it. Lagging and fire protection were used there on a scale nothing like the market towns inland.

About four in five properties in Cheshire predate the 1999 ban, 79.7% of roughly 518,200 homes, and among those 1965 to 1982 is the most common period. Age alone is a reason to check before disturbing anything, not a reason to assume the worst.

The most common property type in Cheshire is semi-detached houses, at about 28% of the stock, followed by terraced houses at 24.7%. Semi-detached houses built before the ban frequently have an asbestos cement garage roof or a sectional outbuilding, which is among the most common things we are asked to remove.

Managing & Disposing of Asbestos in Cheshire

Disposing of asbestos in Cheshire

In Cheshire the rules differ by area. Cheshire East accepts small quantities of bonded asbestos (no more than 6 sheets per property) at its Pyms Lane (Crewe) and Danes Moss (Macclesfield) centres, but you must arrange an appointment first by calling 01270 215 818 (Crewe) or 01625 421 290 (Macclesfield), and it must be double-bagged or double-wrapped and sealed in heavy duty polythene. At Cheshire East sites a van, pickup, commercial type 4x4 or trailer between 1.5 and 3.5 metres long needs a household waste permit, bigger trailers and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not allowed, and staff may ask for evidence of your address, so bring a recent utility or Council Tax bill. Cheshire East also has a booking system for visits at weekends and on bank holidays, which it says applies at some of its centres: check whether you need a slot as well as the asbestos appointment, come in the vehicle you registered on the booking, and you will not be let in if you arrive late. Cheshire West and Chester does not accept asbestos at any household waste recycling centre and tells residents to find a company licensed to remove and dispose of asbestos waste. Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.
