Asbestos Specialists Across Cornwall

Cornwall's tin mines, china clay works and harbours relied on asbestos insulation and asbestos cement. It was also used widely on the county's farm buildings.

Much of the rural stock is granite and rendered cottages, mid-century bungalows and a great many farm outbuildings with asbestos cement roofs and sheeting.

In Cornwall, asbestos is more often in an outbuilding, a farm shed or a garage than inside the house. That follows from a rural county with a long mining and farming history. Around Camborne, Redruth and St Austell, the older industrial buildings and workers' terraces add a second layer.

Of the property in Cornwall that predates the 1999 ban, the largest single group was built before 1900. Altogether about 76.5% of its 289,000 homes predate the ban. Very old buildings often carry asbestos from later repairs and refits rather than from original construction, so what matters is what has been done to a building, not just when it went up.

The most common property type in Cornwall is terraced houses, at about 24.4% of the stock, followed by detached houses at 20.4%. In terraced housing built before the ban, extensions, outbuildings and replacement roofs are where asbestos cement and insulating board most often turn up.

Managing & Disposing of Asbestos in Cornwall

Across Cornwall, the duty covers business premises, public buildings and the shared parts of blocks of flats. What the duty to manage requires is set out in full in our guide for landlords and businesses.

Disposing of asbestos in Cornwall

Cornwall accepts bonded-type household asbestos at its recycling centres with a free allowance of up to 8 bags or 4 sheets per week; anything over that is charged at £10.80 per sheet or bag, payable by card only. It must be double-wrapped or bagged in strong plastic, kept damp, and not broken or cut. Phone the SUEZ helpdesk on 01726 828230 before visiting to confirm which sites accept it. The council says DIY waste, the heading its charges page lists asbestos under, is not taken at Bodmin, Dudnance Lane, Helston, Tintagel or United Mines, and you need to book a time slot at Bodmin, Bude, Launceston, Newquay, Saltash, St. Austell and St Erth. A van, pickup or large trailer needs a vehicle permit. The centres are for Cornwall residents only. Only bonded types are accepted; if no recycling centre can take your waste you need a specialist contractor. (council source, verified 2026-10-10)

Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.

Asbestos waste is classed as hazardous (special) waste. So there are rules on how it's wrapped, labelled, carried and recorded. We set them out in full in our disposal guide.

Councils across Cornwall set their own rules for households. When we arrange the work, disposal is handled for you. For the rules where you live, see our asbestos disposal by council lookup, or check typical prices in the UK asbestos removal cost report.

Asbestos Guides for Cornwall

The largest group of homes in Cornwall is terraced houses, and of the homes built before 2000 the largest group went up before 1900. Terraced housing tends to throw up the same short list of materials, mostly in the ceilings and in whatever was added at the back later.

Asbestos in Cornwall: Common Questions

Where can I dispose of asbestos in Cornwall?
Through Cornwall, under its own rules on amount, wrapping and booking, which you'll find above. When we arrange the work, it's taken to a permitted site for you instead.
Does Cornwall charge to dispose of asbestos?
Yes, at least in part. Cornwall doesn't take all asbestos for free. The price depends on how much there is and how it's wrapped. The figures above are from the council's own guidance. Councils change their rates, so check before you travel.
Which parts of Cornwall do you cover?
All of it. We arrange asbestos work in 10 towns and cities across Cornwall, including Redruth, Falmouth, St Austell and Truro, and in the villages around them. Wherever you are in the county, licensable work is done by HSE-licensed contractors.
Is asbestos likely in a Cornwall property?
Around 76.5% of properties in Cornwall (221,150 of 289,000) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999, so much of the county's housing dates from when it was still in use. Of those, the largest group was built before 1900. That tells you nothing about one property. Only a survey or a lab test can show what's there. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
