Asbestos Specialists Across Gloucestershire
Aircraft building at Gloucester and engineering across Cheltenham and the Stroud valleys used asbestos for insulation and fire protection through the twentieth century.
Victorian and inter-war terraces in the towns sit next to large post-war estates. Asbestos cement is common on outbuildings in the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds.
Gloucester and Cheltenham have lots of Victorian and inter-war housing. The Stroud valleys have old mill buildings, now mostly put to other uses. In the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds the pattern is rural, and asbestos cement on barns, workshops and garages is more common than anything inside the house. Gloucester's docks and the industrial land along the Severn add another layer. There, sheeted workshops, warehouses and yards are a more common find than homes.
Gloucestershire has a newer stock than most of the counties we cover, though about 76.8% of its 441,170 properties still predate the 1999 ban, and among those 1965 to 1982 is the commonest period. A newer county average does not make any individual building safe, and only a survey or a laboratory test settles it.
The most common property type in Gloucestershire is semi-detached houses, at about 26.7% of the stock, followed by detached houses at 23.7%. Semi-detached houses built before the ban frequently have an asbestos cement garage roof or a sectional outbuilding, which is among the most common things we are asked to remove.

Disposing of asbestos in Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire's recycling centres accept only cement-bonded asbestos removed by householders (not contractors). You must first order official asbestos disposal bags and a permit, wrap and seal the asbestos in the provided bags, and pre-book a visit (selecting 'Asbestos' and adding the permit number). Only asbestos in the provided bags is accepted, and a limited number of bags are available per household. The council's page does not say what the bags cost; ask on 01452 596 626 when you order. A van, pick-up or large trailer needs a van booking, not a car booking. Bring your booking reference and arrive within your 30-minute slot, or you may be refused entry. Hempsted recycling centre in Gloucester has been closed for repairs since 13 August 2026 and is expected to reopen in mid November, so check it is open before you book it. Contractor-removed asbestos needs a licensed contractor. (council source, verified 2026-10-10)
Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.
Asbestos waste is classed as hazardous (special) waste. So there are rules on how it's wrapped, labelled, carried and recorded. We set them out in full in our disposal guide.
Councils across Gloucestershire set their own rules for households. When we arrange the work, disposal is handled for you. For the rules where you live, see our asbestos disposal by council lookup, or check typical prices in the UK asbestos removal cost report.
Asbestos Guides for Gloucestershire
The largest group of homes in Gloucestershire is semi-detached houses, and of the homes built before 2000 the largest group went up between 1965 and 1982. Semi-detached houses built before the ban very often came with a garage or an outbuilding, and that is usually where the cement sheeting is.
