Asbestos Specialists Across Norfolk

Norwich's food and shoe factories and Great Yarmouth's port and offshore work used asbestos widely. It also went into farm buildings across the county.

Much of Norfolk is rural. Asbestos cement sheets on barns, stables and outbuildings are as common a find here as insulating board is in the towns.

The high number of bungalows matters too. Many went up when cement roof sheets and textured ceilings were routine. Along the coast at Great Yarmouth and Hunstanton there are also holiday chalets and static caravan sites, more often re-clad over the years than rebuilt.

Norfolk has around 452,100 properties, and about 77.7% of them were built before the 1999 asbestos ban, the biggest share of those in the 1965 to 1982 period. What decides the risk is whether anything is disturbed, so intact material left alone is usually the lower-risk option.

The most common property type in Norfolk is bungalows, at about 23.1% of the stock, followed by detached houses at 21.7%. Bungalows built before the ban very often have asbestos cement in the roof sheets, garage or outbuilding, and textured coatings on the ceilings inside.

Asbestos in Norfolk: Common Questions

Can I take asbestos to the tip in Norfolk?
No. Norfolk doesn't take asbestos at its recycling centres. It has to go a licensed route instead, as set out above. When we arrange the work, it's taken to a permitted site for you.
Which parts of Norfolk do you cover?
All of it. We arrange asbestos work in 11 towns and cities across Norfolk, including Norwich, Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn and Thetford, and in the villages around them. Wherever you are in the county, licensable work is done by HSE-licensed contractors.
Is asbestos likely in a Norfolk property?
Around 77.7% of properties in Norfolk (351,330 of 452,100) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999, so much of the county's housing dates from when it was still in use. Of those, the largest group was built between 1965 and 1982. That tells you nothing about one property. Only a survey or a lab test can show what's there. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
