Asbestos Specialists Across Oxfordshire
Car-making at Cowley used asbestos in brake and clutch parts and in factory insulation. For decades it was the county's biggest industrial employer.
Oxford's post-war growth, and the growth of Banbury, Bicester and Didcot, produced lots of housing from before the ban. It sits alongside much older city buildings.
The Cowley works shaped a large part of east Oxford. The housing built around it dates from when asbestos was in normal use, in factories and homes alike. Banbury, Bicester and Didcot have all grown fast since, so the buildings vary sharply from one town to the next.
Oxfordshire has a newer stock than most of the counties we cover, though about 74.6% of its 325,730 properties still predate the 1999 ban, and among those 1965 to 1982 is the commonest period. A newer county average does not make any individual building safe, and only a survey or a laboratory test settles it.
The most common property type in Oxfordshire is semi-detached houses, at about 25.5% of the stock, followed by terraced houses at 24.1%. Semi-detached houses built before the ban frequently have an asbestos cement garage roof or a sectional outbuilding, which is among the most common things we are asked to remove.

Managing & Disposing of Asbestos in Oxfordshire
It applies to business premises, public buildings and the shared parts of blocks of flats right across Oxfordshire. What the duty to manage requires is set out in full in our guide for landlords and businesses.
Disposing of asbestos in Oxfordshire
Oxfordshire accepts household cement-bonded asbestos (such as pipes or garage roofing) at three centres, Ardley, Redbridge and Dix Pit, and you must book an asbestos visit at least 48 hours ahead. The limit is four sheets per visit, each no larger than 2m by 1m, with no more than two sheets wrapped together, and you must be able to lift the package yourself. The county lists a charge of £5.70 per 1m by 1m sheet for DIY waste over your free allowance, paid by contactless card on site; confirm what you will pay when you book. Keep sheets damp, do not saw or break them, double-wrap in 1000-gauge polythene and bring proof of address. Arrive in the vehicle named on your booking or you may be refused. Some vans and trailers need a free permit and some vehicles are not allowed in at all. The council says Redbridge will close for about three months in 2026 for essential works, so check it is open. Only Oxfordshire residents can book. Other asbestos types must go to a professional contractor. (council source, verified 2026-10-10)
Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.
Asbestos waste is classed as hazardous (special) waste. So there are rules on how it's wrapped, labelled, carried and recorded. We set them out in full in our disposal guide.
Councils across Oxfordshire set their own rules for households. When we arrange the work, disposal is handled for you. For the rules where you live, see our asbestos disposal by council lookup, or check typical prices in the UK asbestos removal cost report.
Asbestos Guides for Oxfordshire
The largest group of homes in Oxfordshire is semi-detached houses, and of the homes built before 2000 the largest group went up between 1965 and 1982. Semi-detached houses built before the ban very often came with a garage or an outbuilding, and that is usually where the cement sheeting is.
