Telford was built as a new town from the 1960s onwards, right in the asbestos years. The rest of the county is rural, with asbestos cement common on farm buildings.

Telford was pieced together from existing places and new building through the 1960s and 1970s. That gives it a dense stock from the peak asbestos years. The rest of Shropshire is among the most rural parts of England, where sheeted farm buildings and outbuildings are the usual find. Oswestry, Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Market Drayton are older market towns. There, asbestos usually came in with later extensions, new roofs and shopfront changes, not the original build.

Shropshire has a newer stock than most of the counties we cover, though about 74.8% of its 239,710 properties still predate the 1999 ban, and among those 1965 to 1982 is the commonest period. A newer county average does not make any individual building safe, and only a survey or a laboratory test settles it.

The most common property type in Shropshire is detached houses, at about 28.3% of the stock, followed by semi-detached houses at 28.1%. Detached properties tend to come with more outbuildings, garages and sheds, and asbestos cement sheeting on those is far more common than anything inside the house.

Managing & Disposing of Asbestos in Shropshire

Disposing of asbestos in Shropshire

Shropshire's recycling centres accept only small quantities of cement-bonded asbestos (for example from corrugated garage roofs). You must first speak to a site attendant at one of the recycling centres, who will give you wrapping materials free of charge and a time to bring the asbestos in; don't just turn up. You may be asked for proof that you live in Shropshire. A van, a trailer larger than 1.2m by 0.9m and some 4x4 vehicles must book a slot first (up to 12 bookings a year) and show proof of residency on arrival. No vehicle over 5m long or 2.1m high is allowed, nor flatbed and pick-up trucks, Luton box vans, tipper vehicles or horse boxes, and there are height restrictions at some sites. Keep sheets intact, wrap them in the strong plastic provided, seal with tape, and place them in the clearly marked red skips. Large quantities, or asbestos from a commercial building such as a farm, must be handled by a professional contractor. The council states that the wrapping is free but does not say whether there is any charge for the disposal itself. (council source, verified 2026-10-10)

Check the site's own page before you travel. Recycling centres are often closed on set weekdays, and often set extra rules for vans, pick-ups, trailers and visitors on foot, such as permits, size limits or no access on foot.
