The county filled up with inter-war suburbs along its railway lines, then post-war commuter estates. So a large share of its homes were built before the 1999 ban.

Much of Surrey went up between the wars as the railways spread out from London. More followed in the post-war decades around Woking, Guildford and Camberley. Garages, sheds and flat-roofed extensions from those years are where asbestos cement most often turns up, rather than in the main house.

More of Surrey's 527,500 properties were built between 1900 and 1939 than in any later period before the 1999 ban, and about 80.9% predate the ban altogether. Housing of that age has usually been re-roofed, extended or rewired at least once, and it is those later works that most often introduced asbestos.

The most common property type in Surrey is flats and maisonettes, at about 24.9% of the stock, followed by detached houses at 24.7%. In flats and maisonettes the material is as likely to be in the communal parts, in service risers, ducts and the panels around them, as it is inside any one home.

Disposing of asbestos in Surrey

In Surrey, small amounts of cement-bonded asbestos (up to six sheets) can be taken to the Epsom, Guildford and Shepperton community recycling centres, sprayed with water and double-wrapped in heavy-duty polythene. Phone the site first to check there is space in the asbestos container, and bring proof of Surrey residency. The county lists asbestos among the items a car can bring free of charge. A van, pickup or trailer needs a van permit and can only bring up to the construction and DIY waste limit, and none of the three sites takes waste on foot.
