Only a little, already taken down? What Blackpool says

Blackpool

Blackpool residents can take small quantities of cement bonded asbestos from their own household maintenance to the tip at Bristol Avenue, with 3 free bags per household.

The full rule
  • First visit the tip office with a council tax or utility bill on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday to be issued up to 3 bags; seal the asbestos in the red bag, then place that inside the white bag and tape it shut.
  • The council's two pages disagree on when you can bring it back: its waste restrictions page says Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday only, while its older asbestos guide says 10.00am to 3.45pm, 7 days a week, so confirm with the tip before you travel.
  • Tell staff at the office when you arrive.
  • The tip's own page lists asbestos as accepted for permit holders only, and says vans and trailers are not permitted at weekends, so ask about both when you collect the bags.
  • The tip is for Blackpool residents only, so bring proof of address each time.
  • Vans, pickups and cars towing trailers must buy a permit (£13.50, one visit a month for 12 months), applied for at least 7 to 10 working days before your visit, and are turned away if they arrive less than 30 minutes before closing.
  • Sign written vehicles, box vans, flat-backs, horse boxes, tippers, long wheel base vehicles, twin-axle trailers and single-axle trailers over 3 m are not allowed on site.
  • No asbestos from commercial activities is accepted.

Blackpool's own pages add: Blackpool's bulky collection service does not take asbestos sheeting.

Your Local Asbestos Specialists in Blackpool

Blackpool is a Lancashire seaside resort, and its buildings reflect that history. Rows of Victorian and Edwardian guesthouses and terraces sit beside inter-war and post-war housing. Many of the older ones are now flats or houses in multiple occupation. A great deal of this was built before the asbestos ban. So asbestos can be in homes, converted properties and business buildings across the town.

We arrange asbestos surveys, testing and removal across Blackpool and the Fylde coast, through the specialist contractors we work with. That includes Lytham St Annes, Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Poulton-le-Fylde and nearby Preston. You might be a homeowner, a landlord with converted or shared housing or a business refurbishing premises. Start with caution. You can't confirm asbestos just by looking, so get a survey or a lab test before work begins.

We cover the FY postcode area across Blackpool and the surrounding towns.

Blackpool's buildings and asbestos

92.9% of properties in Blackpool were built before 2000

That's 67,480 of 72,670. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Blackpool

Around 92.9% of the housing in Blackpool predates the 1999 asbestos ban, which is high, so age alone puts most local property in the bracket worth checking. The largest group was built between 1900 and 1939. Property from this period was built before asbestos use peaked, so where asbestos is present it usually arrived with later work: post-war repairs, added textured coatings, new outbuilding roofs and heating upgrades. That later work is common enough in housing of this age that it still needs checking before anything is disturbed. The largest group by type is terraced houses, 32.6% of 72,670 properties. In terraced housing the materials that turn up most often are textured coatings on ceilings and walls, insulating board around fireplaces, airing cupboards and behind boilers, and asbestos cement in outbuildings, garage roofs, gutters and downpipes. The next largest group is semi-detached houses at 28.4%, usually with a garage or outbuilding of its own to check. By period, 15% were built before 1900, 35.7% between 1919 and 1939 and 6% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Blackpool property?
Around 92.9% of properties in Blackpool (67,480 of 72,670) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1900 and 1939. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
