In East Sussex, bonded asbestos is accepted only at the Eastbourne, Hastings, Heathfield and Newhaven household waste sites, up to 6 bags or 4 sheets per calendar month, at £8 per bag or sheet with no free allowance, card payments only.

The full rule
  • It must be double bagged and sealed, or wrapped in plastic and sealed; asbestos tanks are not accepted.
  • You must book a time slot and show your booking confirmation and proof that you live in East Sussex; non-residents pay £8.75 per visit.
  • Vans may only visit on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, all sites have a 2 metre height barrier, trailer lengths are limited, and Hastings and Heathfield have no access on foot or by bicycle.
  • In Brighton and Hove, bonded asbestos is accepted only at the Hove site, not the Brighton site.
  • The Hove site is closed on bank holidays.
  • One council page gives the limit as 4 bags and another as up to 4 sheets or 6 small builder's bags per household per month.
  • It must be wrapped in at least 2 layers of plastic and sealed, and you must bring two forms of identification, one with a photo, proving you live in the city.
  • The van day, height barrier and trailer rules above are East Sussex rules: at Hove, trailers up to 1.2m are allowed, van drivers must show proof of a Brighton and Hove address with two forms of ID, and vehicles with a gross weight of 3500kg or above, Luton or box style vans, flatbeds, tippers, dropsides and commercial vehicles with signs on the side are banned.
  • Only bonded asbestos is accepted.
  • East Sussex recommends a licensed asbestos removal contractor, and Brighton and Hove says large amounts need a registered waste carrier for asbestos.

Eastbourne's own pages add: Eastbourne Borough Council does not collect asbestos through its bulky waste service. Its own page describes the bags in the monthly limit as small bags of roughly 25kg each, says bonded asbestos must be double wrapped in two layers of plastic, and says site staff record the name, address and vehicle registration of residents bringing asbestos.
