Only a little, already taken down? What Cheshire says

Cheshire

In Cheshire the rules differ by area.

The full rule
  • Cheshire East accepts small quantities of bonded asbestos (no more than 6 sheets per property) at its Pyms Lane (Crewe) and Danes Moss (Macclesfield) centres, but you must arrange an appointment first by calling 01270 215 818 (Crewe) or 01625 421 290 (Macclesfield), and it must be double-bagged or double-wrapped and sealed in heavy duty polythene.
  • At Cheshire East sites a van, pickup, commercial type 4x4 or trailer between 1.5 and 3.5 metres long needs a household waste permit, bigger trailers and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not allowed, and staff may ask for evidence of your address, so bring a recent utility or Council Tax bill.
  • Cheshire East also has a booking system for visits at weekends and on bank holidays, which it says applies at some of its centres: check whether you need a slot as well as the asbestos appointment, come in the vehicle you registered on the booking, and you will not be let in if you arrive late.
  • Cheshire West and Chester does not accept asbestos at any household waste recycling centre and tells residents to find a company licensed to remove and dispose of asbestos waste.
  • Neither council publishes a charge.
  • Confirm with your council first.

Chester's buildings and asbestos

More about the buildings around Chester

The biggest group of homes in Cheshire West and Chester was built between 1945 and 1964. This is the period when asbestos use in British building was climbing steeply, so original materials are more likely to be present rather than added later. Roughly 80.6% of the 167,930 properties here predate the 1999 ban, and the largest group by type is semi-detached houses at 29.5%. In semi-detached housing the most common finds are asbestos cement garage and shed roofs, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board in airing cupboards and around boilers, and cement soffits and rainwater goods. The next largest groups are terraced houses and detached houses, level at 23.3%. By period, 12.6% were built before 1900, 11.5% between 1919 and 1939 and 19.1% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Our Chester coverage runs across CH1, CH2, CH3, CH4 and CH70, and out into the wider Cheshire West and Chester area: Christleton and Waverton, Tarvin, Tattenhall, Saughall, Farndon, Elton and Ellesmere Port Town.

Is asbestos likely in a Chester property?
Around 80.6% of properties in Cheshire West and Chester (135,340 of 167,930) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1945 and 1964. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
