Only a little, already taken down? What Warrington says

Warrington

Warrington does not class asbestos as household waste, so you need a community recycling centre permit to bring small amounts to Gatewarth recycling centre; no permits are issued for the Woolston or Stockton Heath centres.

The full rule
  • Permits are free: call Environmental Waste Controls on 0333 305 2280 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) at least 48 hours before you plan to visit, and say what you are bringing and how much, because you can only tip the items on your permit, and give the make, model and registration number of the vehicle you will use.
  • You can visit up to three times in a 12 month period.
  • Bring your permit number and proof of your address.
  • You cannot access the site on foot, and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, or trailers bigger than 3 metres long or 1.5 metres wide, are not allowed at all.
  • Trade waste is not accepted with or without a permit.
  • The council's permit pages do not give a wrapping rule for asbestos.
  • Its environmental protection page, in advice on taking down a shed or garage with an asbestos roof, says to wrap the material in heavy duty plastic sheeting and seal it with tape; that page also says a qualified building contractor should be used and the waste put in a hazardous waste skip, so confirm with the council when you call.

Warrington's buildings and asbestos

81.4% of properties in the Warrington council area were built before 2000

That's 79,490 of 97,700. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Warrington

The biggest group of homes in the Warrington council area was built between 1965 and 1982. This is the peak period for asbestos in UK housing. Insulating board, textured coatings and asbestos cement were all in routine use, so original materials are common. Roughly 81.4% of the 97,700 properties here predate the 1999 ban, and the largest group by type is semi-detached houses at 30.9%. In semi-detached housing the most common finds are asbestos cement garage and shed roofs, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board in airing cupboards and around boilers, and cement soffits and rainwater goods. The next largest group is terraced houses at 25.1%, where party walls and shared roof spaces mean neighbouring work can disturb material next door. By period, 8.8% were built before 1900, 15.1% between 1919 and 1939 and 17.9% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Our Warrington coverage runs across WA1, WA2, WA3, WA4, WA5 and WA55, and out into the wider Warrington area: Culcheth, Croft, Burtonwood, Winwick, Rixton-with-Glazebrook, Glazebury and Appleton Thorn.

Is Your Asbestos Work Licensed?

Is asbestos likely in a Warrington property?
Around 81.4% of properties in the Warrington council area (79,490 of 97,700) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1965 and 1982. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
