Only a little, already taken down? What Worcestershire says

Worcestershire

In Worcestershire, asbestos is accepted at five household recycling centres: Hallow Road (Worcester West), Malvern, Pershore (Hill and Moor), Redditch and Stourport-on-Severn.

The full rule
  • It must be double bagged or wrapped in plastic sheeting and sealed (the county's site rules name cement bonded asbestos), and at Hallow Road, Pershore, Redditch and Stourport-on-Severn it must fit the container openings, which measure 84cm by 158cm.
  • Take care not to break the pieces.
  • A commercial type vehicle (including a hire van) or a trailer over 1.3m in internal length needs a free e-permit; each e-permit allows one visit and a household can have up to 12 a year.
  • Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, double axle trailers and tipper vehicles are not allowed, and pedestrian access is not allowed.
  • The centres are for residents of Herefordshire and Worcestershire only, and Redditch requires a residents permit or proof of residency to enter.
  • Ring the site before you travel to check the container is available, and tell a site assistant when you arrive.
  • The county council does not publish a charge.
  • For removal, it tells residents to contact their local council.

Worcester's own pages add: Worcester City Council publishes no asbestos disposal guidance, and its bulky waste service cannot remove hazardous items. Of the two county tips in Worcester, Hallow Road (Worcester West) takes asbestos and Bilford Road (Worcester East) does not.

Worcester's buildings and asbestos

84.4% of properties in Worcester were built before 2000

That's 40,630 of 48,140. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Worcester

In semi-detached housing the most common finds are asbestos cement garage and shed roofs, textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board in airing cupboards and around boilers, and cement soffits and rainwater goods. That matters in Worcester because semi-detached houses are the largest group there, 29.4% of 48,140 properties, and around 84.4% of the stock predates the 1999 asbestos ban. The next largest group is terraced houses at 24.7%, where party walls and shared roof spaces mean neighbouring work can disturb material next door. The largest group was built between 1983 and 1999. Blue and brown asbestos were banned in 1985 and white in 1999, so property from this period sits either side of the ban. The later it was built, the less likely it is, but it is not ruled out until 2000. By period, 16% were built before 1900, 12.3% between 1919 and 1939 and 15.5% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Our Worcester coverage runs across WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4 and WR5, and out into the wider Worcester area: Fernhill Heath, Warndon and Rushwick.

Asbestos Specialists Covering Worcester

Worcester is a Worcestershire city of around 100,000 people. It has a compact core of older housing with post-war growth around it.

Older homes here tend to throw up the usual list. There are textured coatings on ceilings, insulating board around fireplaces and airing cupboards, and asbestos cement on garages, sheds and soffits. We arrange surveys, testing, removal and disposal across the WR1 to WR5 districts. Any suspect material is confirmed by a survey or a lab test before it's touched.

We also cover the surrounding area, including Droitwich, Great Malvern, Stourport-on-Severn, Bromsgrove, Evesham and Kidderminster.

Nearby areas we cover: Cheltenham, Gloucester, Birmingham.

Is Your Asbestos Work Licensed?

It depends on the material, not on where you are. HSE puts the decision on the firm doing the work.

The largest group of homes in Worcester is semi-detached housing, and the largest group by age was built between 1983 and 1999. Semi-detached houses built before the ban very often came with a garage or an outbuilding, and that is usually where the cement sheeting is.

Is asbestos likely in a Worcester property?
Around 84.4% of properties in Worcester (40,630 of 48,140) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1983 and 1999. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
