Only a little, already taken down? What Northamptonshire says

Northamptonshire

In Northamptonshire the rules differ.

The full rule
  • West Northamptonshire does not accept asbestos at its recycling centres, but small quantities of bonded asbestos that a householder has removed from their own home are taken at the Thalia waste transfer station on Liliput Road, Brackmills, Northampton.
  • Phone 01604 347660 before you go or the site may refuse the waste.
  • Only one trip per household is permitted, asbestos you paid someone to remove is not accepted, and each sheet or pipe must be wrapped in clear thick polythene and sealed with tape, with no piece longer than 1.8 metres.
  • The subsidised charge is £86.50 for up to 5 sheets of 900mm by 1.8 metres or up to 9 metres of pipe or guttering, and £70.18 for one water tank; anything more is charged at the commercial rate.
  • North Northamptonshire does not accept asbestos at any of its recycling centres and recommends a registered contractor, but says small quantities of bonded asbestos can be taken to the waste transfer station in Northampton by booking in advance.

Northampton's buildings and asbestos

76.1% of properties in West Northamptonshire were built before 2000

That's 142,810 of 187,610. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Northampton

The biggest group of homes in West Northamptonshire was built between 1965 and 1982. This is the peak period for asbestos in UK housing. Insulating board, textured coatings and asbestos cement were all in routine use, so original materials are common. Roughly 76.1% of the 187,610 properties here predate the 1999 ban, and the largest group by type is terraced houses at 27.1%. In terraced housing the materials that turn up most often are textured coatings on ceilings and walls, insulating board around fireplaces, airing cupboards and behind boilers, and asbestos cement in outbuildings, garage roofs, gutters and downpipes. The next largest group is detached houses at 25.9%, usually with a garage or outbuilding of its own to check. By period, 12.3% were built before 1900, 8.9% between 1919 and 1939 and 23.1% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Our Northampton coverage runs across NN1, NN2, NN3, NN4, NN5 and NN7, and out into the wider Northampton area: Collingtree and Milton Malsor, Great Houghton, Collingtree and Upton.

Is asbestos likely in a Northampton property?
Around 76.1% of properties in West Northamptonshire (142,810 of 187,610) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1965 and 1982. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
