Only a little, already taken down? What Peterborough says

Peterborough

Peterborough offers a disposal service at its Household Recycling Centre for small quantities of white cement-bonded asbestos, only from maintenance and repair work on your own household that you carried out yourself.

The full rule
  • You must apply online in advance with photos; you cannot turn up without an approved application, and the council then sends asbestos bags and a time slot.
  • Small quantities are free (one or two small sheets, a single pipe, flue or gutter up to 2.2m, or a small water tank).
  • If you have more than that, the whole amount is charged by quote, up to about six sheets or pipes, and only one chargeable application is accepted in 12 months.
  • The sealed bag must fit the 1.2m skip opening and you must carry it yourself.
  • The asbestos page says a van or trailer needs an e-permit, and the recycling centre page says all Peterborough residents need a free vehicle e-permit before visiting, so get one or confirm with the council first.
  • The centre is for Peterborough residents, so bring proof of address.
  • Vehicles can be no larger than a long wheel base transit type van, trailer beds no longer than 8 feet 6 inches (2.5 metres), and Luton type box vans, extra long wheel base vans, horse boxes, caravans and large flatbeds are not allowed in.
  • Anything more, or non-domestic asbestos, needs a specialist contractor.

Your Local Asbestos Specialists in Peterborough

Peterborough is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire that grew fast after it was chosen for growth in the late 1960s. So large late twentieth century townships sit around an older core of Victorian terraces, inter-war housing and railway and industrial buildings. The asbestos ban didn't take full effect until 1999. That means plenty of this stock, including much of the newer building, can still contain asbestos.

We cover Peterborough and the area around it, including Stamford, Huntingdon, Wisbech, Spalding and March. The specialist contractors we work with carry out asbestos removal, surveys and testing. You might own an older terrace, live in one of the newer townships or manage business property. Treat anything suspect with caution. You can't tell asbestos from a harmless material by sight, so have anything doubtful surveyed or lab-tested before any work.

We cover the PE postcode area across Peterborough and the surrounding towns.

73.9% of properties in the Peterborough council area were built before 2000

That's 68,460 of 92,630. Asbestos wasn't fully banned until 1999. Only a survey or a test can tell you about one property: do you need an asbestos survey on a house?

More about the buildings around Peterborough

The biggest group of homes in the Peterborough council area was built between 1965 and 1982. This is the peak period for asbestos in UK housing. Insulating board, textured coatings and asbestos cement were all in routine use, so original materials are common. Roughly 73.9% of the 92,630 properties here predate the 1999 ban, and the largest group by type is terraced houses at 26.7%. In terraced housing the materials that turn up most often are textured coatings on ceilings and walls, insulating board around fireplaces, airing cupboards and behind boilers, and asbestos cement in outbuildings, garage roofs, gutters and downpipes. The next largest group is semi-detached houses at 25.1%, usually with a garage or outbuilding of its own to check. By period, 7.4% were built before 1900, 7.2% between 1919 and 1939 and 25.8% since 2000. None of that tells you whether a particular property contains asbestos; only a survey or a laboratory test can.

Do you provide asbestos services in Peterborough?
Yes. We arrange asbestos removal, surveys, testing, disposal, encapsulation and management across Peterborough and the wider Cambridgeshire area, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. The work is done by the specialist contractors we work with. Every job starts with a free quote, with no obligation. Any suspect material is checked by a professional survey or a test at an accredited lab.
Is asbestos likely in a Peterborough property?
Around 73.9% of properties in the Peterborough council area (68,460 of 92,630) were built before 2000. Asbestos wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. So most local buildings date from a time when it was still in use. The largest group of local homes was built between 1965 and 1982. That doesn't mean any one property contains asbestos. Only a survey or a lab test can tell you that. Figures: Valuation Office Agency, Council Tax: stock of properties 2026, table CTSOP4.0 (31 March 2026).
Does my property contain asbestos?
If your property was built or refurbished before 2000, it may well contain asbestos. It wasn't fully banned in the UK until 1999. It often turns up in roof sheets, textured coatings like Artex, floor tiles, pipe lagging and insulation board. The only reliable way to know for sure is a professional survey.
